About Career 

As a Textile Design Technician, you will be responsible for creating designs on fabrics (cloth) by dyeing or printing or using computer software (like AutoCAD). The designed fabrics will be used further for making garments, carpets, clothing, curtains, wall hangings, towels, bed sheets, toys, and other consumer products. You will be taught how to use designing software as most of textile designing work is computerized today. Many textile designers today have their own business (self-employed), while others are working as part of a designing team.

You will be involved in selecting the appropriate fabric/materials/ accessories as well as making the design, following the prescribed budget and details. As a Textile Designer, you can also observe and draw different objects from their surroundings to create 3-dimensional effects on various fabrics based on their shapes, colo, and textures.

You should have a deep understanding of traditional Indian textiles and art, concepts and principles of designing, color schemes and basics of dyeing/printing. Typically, Textile Designers work indoors in both industrial and non-industrial locations. It can be either in textile manufacturing facilities (small, medium, and large-scale) or independent fabric designing studios. They mostly spend long hours (10-11 hours daily) in manufacturing facilities/factories.

Key Roles and Responsibilities:

As a Textile Designer, you will be engaged with one or more of the following roles and responsibilities: -

1. You will be choosing raw materials for your designs, such as cotton, polyester, silk or wool, and considering factors such as durability, colour fastness and chemical resistance.

2. You will be checking for faults in materials such as a tear, temple cut, holes, stains and patches.

3. You will be sending the raw materials for the processing which includes spinning, weaving, dyeing and printing to get the fabrics for designing.

4. You will be creating designs on fabrics by dyeing or printing on various items such as garments, apparels and other items as per instructions for the design, material, pattern, etc.

5. You will be using different types of patterns and designs like diamonds, ogee, wavy lines and other geometric patterns in your designs.

6. You will be using tools like pencils/pens, graph paper, computer, scanner, CAD software for specific designs and colour printers considering factors like types of stitches and pattern of repeat prints in the design.

7. You will be sending the designed fabrics to be manufactured into final products such as garments and interior apparels and delivering them to the clients.

8. You will be assisting technicians in maintaining all designing equipment, instruments and tools for future use.

Career Entry Pathway 

Class 10 all subjects as per scheme of studies - Diploma in Textile Design

After Class 10, you can do a Diploma in ‘Textile Design’, ‘Textile Processing’, ‘Textile Technology’, ‘Textile Chemistry’ or similar from any Polytechnic college or a similar institute. Diploma is usually a 3-year course.

Class 10 all subjects as per scheme of studies - training for Textile Trades or similar trades at an ITI or similar institute – admission to 2nd year of Diploma in ‘Textile Design’

After Class 10, you can go for training at any Industrial Training Institute (ITI), National Skill Training Institute (NSTI), Regional Vocational Training Institute (RVTI), National Vocational Training Institute (NVTI), Industrial Training Center (ITC) or other vocational institutes for textile related trades, ‘Textile & Handloom’, ‘Bleaching, Dyeing and Calico Printing’, ‘Dressmaking’, ‘Computer Aided Design’, ‘Knitting with Machine’, ‘Fashion Design Technology’, ‘Cutting & Sewing’, ‘Embroidery & Needle Work’, ‘Tailoring’, ‘Hand Weaving’, ‘Leather Goods Making’ or similar. Then you can be admitted directly to the 2nd year of Diploma in ‘Textile Design’, ‘Textile Processing’, ‘Textile Technology’, and ‘Textile Chemistry’ or similar in many Polytechnic colleges or similar institutions through lateral entry route.

Required Qualification & Competencies 

After completing Class 10, you can go for:

1. Diploma courses.

2. ITI training courses.

These Diploma courses are output oriented technical skill training programs with the objective of turning a student or non-worker to a professional.

If you are interested in going to a college after your Diploma course, you can also get a lateral entry into 2nd year of an undergraduate (Bachelor degree) course like B. Des in Textile Design.

1. You should have interests for Realistic Occupations. Realistic occupations involve more practical and hands-on activities than paperwork or office work. Realistic occupations often involve physical activities for getting things done using various tools and equipment. 

2. You should have interests for Conventional Occupations. Conventional occupations involve repetitive and routine tasks as well as fixed processes or procedures for getting things done. These occupations involve working more with data, systems, and procedures and less with ideas or creativity.

3. You should have interests for Investigative Occupations. Investigative occupations involve working with ideas and quite a lot of thinking, often abstract or conceptual thinking. These involve learning about facts and figures; involve the use of data analysis, assessment of situations, decision making and problem-solving.

4. You should have knowledge of Technical and Engineering Design - Knowledge of various techniques, methods, specifications and tools for creating, developing and laying out designs. This includes developing blueprints, drawing, and models.

5. You should have knowledge of Creative Design - Knowledge of various techniques, methods, and specifications for creating and developing designs for various products and materials such as textile, clothes, accessories, jewellery, etc.

6. You should have Technical Skills - using various technologies and technical methods to get things done or solve problems.

7. You should have Systems Analysis Skills - determining how a system should work and how changes in conditions, operations, or the environment will affect outcomes.

8. You should have Quality Control Analysis Skills - conducting tests and inspections of products, services, or processes to evaluate quality or performance.

9. You should have Systems Evaluation Skills - identifying measures or indicators of system performance and the actions needed to improve or correct performance, relative to the goals of the system.

10. You should have Active Listening Skills - Giving full attention to what other people are saying, understanding the points being made by others, asking questions, etc.

11. You should have Critical Thinking Skills - analysis of complex situations, using logic and reasoning to understand the situations and take appropriate actions or make interpretations and inferences.

Salary Offered  

1. In the entry-level jobs: You may expect to get about Rs. 12,000.00 –Rs, 15,000.00 per month.

2. Salaries increase with your work experience and as you get promoted.

3. After you’ve gained experience of around 1-5 years, you can expect Rs. 10,000 to Rs. 25, 000 a month or more.

4. With 6-12 years of work experience, you may expect to get about Rs. 15,000.00 – Rs. 40,000.00 per month.

5. With 12+ years of work experience, you may expect to get about Rs. 25,000.00 – Rs. 55, 000.00 per month.

Future Prospects 

1. You can expect a bright future in this field as the industry growth prospects are encouraging. India is the largest exporter of yarn in the global market. The overall volume of employment in the Handlooms and Handicrafts Sector is expected to reach about 17.79 million  from approximately 13.93 million, hence translating to a human resource requirement of around 3.86 million skilled individuals.

2. This sector is predicted to experience a shift to organize from unorganized market model. Many small clusters of Handicrafts and Handlooms being developed with the support of private traders/entrepreneurs. The Indian Retail market is expected to reach the mark of 865 billion US Dollars from 490 billion US Dollars, experiencing year-on-year growth of 6%. Corporatized Retail in India is expected to grow to 24%. The overall volume of employment in the Apparel Sector will grow from approximately 35 million currently to about 62 million , hence translating to a human resource requirement of around 25 million qualified individuals.

3. Organized retail in the Leather Industry is projected to increase at a rate of 25% compounded annually to reach 200 billion US Dollars. A surge in online consumer base is also contributing to the expansion of this sector. The number of internet users is expected to grow to 729 million. The online fashion market is expected to reach 14 billion US Dollars.
