About Career
As a Radio Jockey, you will be working in the broadcasting industry. You will have to take on many roles at the workplace such as a talk show host, or live sports events reporter, and so on. Your responsibilities will be to play music/songs on air; hold discussions with listeners; conduct on-air interviews with famous personalities, promote products during shows, and advertise for various brands. You may also speak about other issues like local/national stories, on weather, and provide information about songs/movies/general trivia in between shows.
Usually, you have to follow scripts for certain types of broadcasting. However, sometimes you may be required to improvise radio shows/content as you go. It is crucial that you have a pleasant, soothing, and smooth voice and the ability to keep your listeners engaged with witty comments and humor. Along with good communication skills, you should possess a friendly, dynamic, and spontaneous vibe so that your audience can instantly connect with you.
Key Roles & Responsibilities
1. To ideate, create, design, develop, produce, and host shows on radio channels, specially FM.
2. To research on different topics based on which the shows can be scripted.
3. To conduct audience research to identify the target audience of specific radio shows and plan/script them accordingly.
4. To prepare and write scripts for radio shows, interviews, etc.
5. To listen to various genres of music (pop, indie pop, rock, classical, hip-hop, etc.) on a daily basis.
6. To prepare daily program schedules.
7. To update the radio station’s website about upcoming programs, interviews, etc.
8. To deliberate upon the nature, approach, and style of the show (whether to use an enthusiastic tone, or to go for a romantic tone, etc.).
9. To handpick the songs for music hour programs as well as the jingles/advertisements that play in between the shows.
10. To interview famous personalities/celebrities from showbiz/politics/business,etc., on-air.
11. To interact with audience during live radio programs.
12. To promote brands/sponsors both during or in between the programs .
13. To promote radio programs to prospective sponsors/clients.
14. To make personal appearances in social/public events or parties.

Career Entry Pathway
Class 10 all subjects as per scheme of studies - Class 11-12 with any other subject as per scheme of studies - Appear for talent hunts conducted by radio channels/Undertake Radio Jockey training programs/courses in Media Training Institutes.
After completing Class 11-12 with any other subject as per scheme of studies, you may appear for talent hunts conducted by radio channels or you may undertake Radio Jockey Training programs/courses in Media Training Institutes.
Required Qualification & Competencies
1. You don’t need any specific qualification to become a RJ. You may choose to complete your school education and then participate in a RJ Talent Hunt. Quite a few radio channels conduct Talent Hunt program. However, it may not happen every year.
2. You may do a training program in RJ/DJ. This may help you to pick up a few tricks. But you can always teach yourself online. What you need in ample amount is your passion for music belonging to different genres. You should be someone who listen to music almost all the time.

Career - Job Opportunities & Profiles
You will get job as a Radio Jockey in radio stations and radio channels.
Work environment
Radio Jockeys work in radio stations. It is not the run-of-the-mill 9-5 job. Radio Jockeys usually begin their day very early in the morning (say 6 am), and continue working till late evening. They might do their work in shifts (morning shift or everning shift), depending upon the time slot of their shows. Often, they have to work extra hours for brainstorming on new shows, or for the content of existing shows, and planning programs.
Career Growth
You will begin your career as a Radio Jockey. After 8-10 years of experience, you can get promoted to Executive Producer. After 12-15 years of experience, you can upgrade to the position of Programming Head of a channel.
Salary Offered
1. For Radio Jockeys, the earning prospects largely depend on their popularity. For instance, a Radio Jockey might become massively popular with just one show, or it may take years to come under the limelight. Usually, the more popular you are, the higher is your pay scale.
2. However, at the beginning of your career, you will earn around Rs. 10,000 - 20,000 per month.
3. After 3-7 years, your average monthly earning will be around Rs. 50,000 - 1,10,000.

Thanks to the increasing number of FM Radio listeners in Delhi and Maharashtra, these cities have emerged as the leading markets for FM radio in the past 5 years. At present, radio stations are expanding in tier-2 and tier-3 cities and also, radio content is becoming diversified to cater to the needs of a vast audience base with varied interest.
