About Career
1. Automotive Service Technicians are trained to work on the mechanical, electrical, and electronic parts of motor vehicles including engine, brakes, clutch, transmission, suspension systems, electrical systems, electronic sensors, mechatronic systems, etc. They work on various parts of automobiles with the help of computerized systems, hydraulic jacks (machines that use liquids as the power source) or various other hand tools.
2. As an Automotive Service Technician, you will be responsible for inspecting, maintaining and repairing the various kinds of electric, gas, hybrid and other alternative fuel vehicles such as cars, heavy or light vehicles (two-wheelers, three-wheelers, trucks, etc.). You will be responsible for diagnosing the vehicles, performing preventative maintenance and repairing the automobiles.
3. As an Automotive Service Technician, you will be required to review the damages to the body parts, estimate the repair cost, plan your work accordingly, and let the customer know about both the cost and plan. You will be assessing the computer system of the vehicle to understand that it is working well or not.
Key Roles and Responsibilities
As an Automotive Service Technician, you will be engaged in all or some of the following key roles and responsibilities:
1. You will be discussing with customers for understanding vehicle problems.
2. You will be test-driving vehicles and checking systems/components of the vehicle for finding faults and defects.
3. You will be required to follow instructions of the supervisors regarding which automobile part(s) to restore or replace.
4. You will be installing replacements using mechanized tools, or computer-based equipment or hand instruments.
5. You will be repairing, replacing and adjusting brakes, transmission systems, power systems, steering systems, window systems, batteries, ignition, etc.
6. You will be removing damaged sections of vehicles using metal-cutting guns- a gun that is suitable for cutting or piercing the thin edge or sharp point.
7. You will be required to perform maintenance service es, such as lubrication, oil changes, oil filter changes, part replacement, etc.
8. You will be running and testing repaired or replaced parts for checking whether they are fit and working properly or not.
9. You will be performing test drive of vehicles after repair and maintenance work.

Career Entry Pathway
Class 8 with any subjects – NSQF Training and Certificate in ‘Automotive Service Technician Level 3’ related trades.
After Class 8, you can pursue National Skill Qualifications Framework (NSQF) Training and Certificate in Automotive Service Technician Level 3’ or similar courses. This certification is of 500 hours (i.e. 160 hours of viva or theoretical training and 340 hours of practical training). However, you may also obtain an NSQF certificate in ‘Repair - Welder’ (400hours); ‘Spare parts Operations Executive Level 3’ (300hours) or similar courses. The numbers in brackets are the total number of training hours for each course.
After Class 10, you can apply for any ITI or Diploma in Mechanical/Electrical/Automobile Trade from any ITI, Polytechnic or other similar institute. ITI courses are of 2 years duration and Diploma courses are of 3 years of duration.
After Class 10, you can pursue National Skill Qualifications Framework (NSQF) Training and Certificate Level 4 in ‘Automotive Service Technician (Two and Three Wheelers)’ or similar courses. This certification is of 500 hours (i.e. 160 hours of viva or theoretical training and 340 hours of practical training). However, if you have completed any ITI or Diploma in Mechanical/Electrical/Automobile Engineering from any Polytechnic Institute or other similar institute then also you may obtain this NSQF Level 4 Training and Certificate course. If you have completed class 10 with any subjects, then you mandatorily need at least 3-5 years of field experience before going for this training and certification course. Alternatively, you need to have 1-2 years of field experience if you have completed Diploma.
After Class 12, you can pursue National Skill Qualifications Framework (NSQF) Training and Certificate in: ‘Automotive Electrician Level 4’ or similar trades. The total number of training hours is 400 hours.
After Class 10 and a Diploma in Mechanical or Automobile Engineering from any Polytechnic Institute or other similar institutes, you can pursue National Skill Qualifications Framework (NSQF) Training and Certificate in: ‘Automotive Service Technician Level 5’ or similar trades. The total number of training hours is 500 hours.
Required Qualification & Competencies
After class 8, you may obtain NSQF Training and Certificate in ‘Automotive Service Technician Level 3’ related trades. But if you have completed class 10, you can go for:
1. ITI Certificate in Automobile/ Mechanical/ Electrical Trade
2. Diploma in Mechanical, Electrical or Automobile Engineering
3. NSQF Training and Certificate for ‘Automotive Service Technician Level 5’ or similar courses
4. NSQF Level 4 Training and Certificate for ‘Automotive Service Technician (Two and Three Wheelers)’ or similar courses

2. You will get work opportunities mostly at the vehicle service centers run by the distributors and sellers of automobiles. All vehicle manufacturing companies appoint distributors for selling automobiles. Most of the distributors also run service centers.
3. Apart from distributors’ service centers, vehicle manufacturing companies also authorize many service centers to offer servicing and maintenance of vehicles manufactured by them. You may get work opportunities in such a service center.
4. Besides the above, there are many other independent vehicle service centers or mobile and roadside repair centers which operate all over the country. You may get to work with these service centers as well.
Work Environment
As an Automotive Service Technician, you will be working for around 30 to 40 hours a week; sometimes you might have to work for longer hours to finish the work. You will be working in well-ventilated and well-lit repair shops. However, you might often identify and fix automotive problems with computers and also will be working with greasy parts and tools which sometimes might discomfort you. While working with heavy parts and tools you might get involved with some workplace injuries such as small cuts, sprains or bruises, etc.
Career Growth
From entry-level job positions such as apprentices or trainees, you may get higher roles such as Technician and then may become Senior Technician. Then you may get promoted as a Foreman. Then you may get promoted as a service Advisor. At the top of this hierarchy, you may get promoted as a Works Manager or Workshop Manager.
