About Career
As a Mason, you will be constructing exterior and interior walls of buildings or other structures using bricks, stone blocks, marbles, granite blocks or bricks of other material. You may also pave floors using tiles, bricks, stones, marbles, etc. and apply cement mix on ceilings and other surfaces of a building. You will also work in constructing roofs or ceilings using concrete mixes. Concrete mixes are prepared either by hand using a spade or by a concrete mixer (in most cases). Concrete mixes contain cement, sand, and stone chips of various types.
You will be required to understand the building plans, wall thickness, and other related specifications. You will prepare cement mixes (using cement, sand, and water) as well as concrete mixes. You may cut and shape tiles, stone blocks, marbles, granite blocks, and other materials.
You will be using various tools such as trowel (it is used to lift and apply cement mixes in small quantities), float (a flat wooden tool used to smoothen plastered surfaces), mason’s square (an L shaped tool used to check whether a wall corner is perfectly right-angled or not), measuring tape, plumb bob and plumb rule (used to check whether a wall is perfectly vertical or not), and chisel for your work. You will also use a spade, brick hammer, hoe (a short spade), polisher (for polishing floors and other surfaces), putty knife (used for finishing surfaces using putty), etc.
Key Roles and Responsibilities
Your key roles and responsibilities will be:
1. Understanding the building drawing and various measurements and specifications for constructing walls, floors, and other exterior and interior surfaces of buildings.
2. Checking all materials like cement, sand, stone chips, etc.
3. Ensuring all tools are in working condition.
4. Ensuring bricks and other materials (such as stone blocks, marbles, etc.) are wet or the surfaces (on which cement will be plastered) are rough and wet.
5. Preparing cement or concrete mixes.
6. Laying brick/stone blocks/granite blocks/marbles, etc. for construction of walls and other surfaces in the building.
7. Checking of the wall or surface line to ensure leveling and vertical alignment.
8. Carrying out pointing in brick masonry (checking for corners, etc.)
9. Performing different masonry works such as laying out floors, constructing roofs (using concrete mixes), paving floors, constructing arches, staircases, and walkways.
10. Repairing brick walls and other surfaces which might have been damaged.

Class 5 in school – Obtain an NSQF Level 1 Qualification in Helper Mason
After completing class 5 in school, you can obtain an NSQF (National Skill Qualification Framework) Level 1 Qualification in Helper Mason. For this Qualification, you need to be 18 years of age
Class 5 in school – Work experience as a non-trained/trained worker/helper mason – Obtain an NSQF Level 2 Qualification in Assistant Mason
After completing class 5 in school, you either have a site/work experience of 18 months as a non-trained worker in the same occupation or 9 months as a trained worker/Helper Mason, before obtaining an NSQF Level 2 Qualification in Assistant Mason. For this Qualification, you need to be 18 years of age
Class 5 in school – Work experience as a non-trained/trained worker/assistant mason - Obtain an NSQF Level 3 Qualification in Mason - Concrete
After completing class 5 in school, you either have a site/work experience of 5 years as a non-trained worker in the same occupation or 2 years as a trained worker/Assistant Mason, before obtaining an NSQF Level 3 Qualification in Mason – Concrete. For this Qualification, you need to be 18 years of age
Class 10 all subjects as per scheme of studies – Work experience as a semi-skilled helper - Obtain an NSQF Level 3 Qualification in Plumbing Mason
After completing class 10, you need to have minimum 2 years of work experience as a semi-skilled helper, before obtaining an NSQF (National Skill Qualification Framework) Level 3 Qualification in Plumbing Mason
Class 5 in school – Work experience as a non-trained/trained worker/assistant mason - Obtain an NSQF Level 4 Qualification in Mason General
After completing class 5 in school, you either have a site/work experience of 5 years as a non-trained worker in the same occupation or 2 years as a trained worker/Assistant Mason, before obtaining an NSQF Level 4 Qualification in Mason General. For this Qualification, you need to be 18 years of age
Class 5 in school – Work experience as a non-trained/trained worker/General Mason - Obtain an NSQF Level 4 Qualification in Mason - Tiling
After completing class 5 in school, you either have a site/work experience of 8 years as a non-trained worker in the same occupation or 2 years as a trained worker/General Mason, before obtaining an NSQF Level 4 Qualification in Mason - Tiling. For this Qualification, you need to be 18 years of age
Class 8 in School – Work experience as a non-trained/trained worker/Mason Tiling – Obtain an NSQF Level 4 Qualification in Mason – Marble, Granite, and Stone
After completing class 8 in school, you either have a site/work experience of 8 years as a non-trained worker in the same occupation or 2 years as a trained worker/Mason Tiling before obtaining an NSQF Level 4 Qualification in Mason - Marble, Granite, and Stone. For this Qualification, you need to be 18 years of age
Class 8 in School – Work experience as a non-trained/trained worker/General Mason - Obtain an NSQF Level 4 Qualification in Mason Special finishing or Mason form Finished & Special Concrete
After completing class 8 in school, you either have a site/work experience of 8 years as a non-trained worker in the same occupation or 3 years as a trained worker/General Mason, before obtaining an NSQF Level 4 Qualification in Mason Special Finishing or Mason form Finished & Special Concrete. For this Qualification, you need to be 18 years of age
Class 5 or Basic Literacy – Site work experience in masonry occupation - Obtain an NSQF Level 4 Qualification in Mason Heritage Works (Electives: Lime/Stone)
After completing class 5 or basic literacy in school, you need to obtain 3 years of site experience in masonry occupation before obtaining an NSQF Level 4 Qualification in Mason Heritage Works (Electives: Lime/Stone). For this Qualification, you need to be 21 years of age
Class 8 in School – Certificate/Diploma or other similar course in Mason (Building Constructor)
After completing class 8 in school, you can apply for Certificate/Diploma or other similar course in Mason (Building Constructor). The duration of this course is 1 year

Career - Job Opportunities & Profiles
There are no permanent jobs. You will be on a contractual job for a building construction project. You will be contracted by various labor contractors or contractor firms. You will be paid daily wages.
Career Growth
Opportunities from growth are limited other than getting more skilled in work. So, you can grow from a Mason helper to Assistant Mason. And from Assistant Mason to a General Mason. You can grow into Mason (Specialized Finishing), etc. After having 12-15 years of experience you can become a site supervisor for masonry work.
Salary Offered
1. You will be earning daily wages in the range of Rs. 380-400 per day in the beginning.
2. With 8-10 years of experience, this can go up to about Rs. 500 – 550 per day. Per day will mean 8 hours of a shift.
3. You may also get work overseas, especially in the Middle Eastern and North African countries. Wages there would be much more. You can earn about Rs. 40,000-50,000 or even more per month on an average.
