About Career 

1. Indian Navy’s officers and sailors protect India’s ocean borders and water territories to prevent and defeat any territorial aggression of other nations during war times. They work in close coordination with Indian Army and Indian Air Force to defeat any attack to Indian territories, including land and sea. They also pursue India’s political and military interests such as helping another nation to protect itself from enemy attacks.

2. Ocean borders are called maritime borders, which denote limits of territorial waters. India’s ocean borders and water territories lie in the Arabian Sea, Bay of Bengal and Indian Ocean.  

3. During peace time, that is, when there is no war, Indian Navy guards India’s maritime borders with other forces such as Indian Coast Guard and work as a deterrent to any threat of maritime aggression from other countries. Strength of Indian Navy is critically important to ensure the nation’s security objectives.

Who is Eligible

Career Entry Pathway 

Class 10 all subjects as per scheme of studies- Entry as a Matric Recruit / Musician Entry

After you pass Class 10, you can directly appear for the written test and physical fitness test. If you are selected, you can join as a Matric Recruit and after training, you will be placed as a Seaman II (Chef) / Ordinary Seaman (Steward) / Hygienist. If you are proficient in music, you can join as a Seaman II (Musician). For this, you have to appear for a Music performance test in addition to the written test and physical fitness test.

Class 10 all subjects as per scheme of studies - Class 11-12 with Physics, Mathematics and Chemistry/Biology/Computer along with any other subject as per scheme of studies - SSR Entry or Artificer Apprentice Entry

This is Senior Secondary Recruit (SSR) and Artificer Apprentice (AA) Recruit pathway. For this, you will have to complete class 11-12 with Physics and Mathematics and one of the subjects from - Chemistry/Biology/Computer along with any other subject as per scheme of studies. If you score at least 60% marks in aggregate, then you can join as an Artificer Apprentice. However, if you score less than 60%, you can join as a Senior Secondary Recruit. If you join as an Artificer Apprentice, you will have to undergo a 9-week training. As a Senior Secondary Recruit, you will have to undergo 22-week training. On successful completion of training, you will be placed as a Seaman II if you are coming from the SSR route. If you are coming from the AA route, you will be placed as an Apprentice.

Class 10 all subjects as per scheme of studies - Sports Entry into Indian Navy or do Class 11-12 with Mathematics and Physics and any one subject from Chemistry/Biology/Computer - Enter as a Senior Secondary Recruit (Sports)

Candidates with a secondary / higher secondary level of education with competencies in various sports (participation in international/national/ state level / inter-university championships is mandatory) can be considered for entry as a Sailor – either as a Senior Secondary (SSR) recruit or as a Matric Recruit (MR) depending upon their educational qualifications. If you have obtained a minimum of 6th position in a senior national level championship or 3rd position a junior national level championship or the 3rd position in an inter-university championship, then you can get a direct entry as a Petty Officer.

Required Qualification & Competencies 

 To join the Indian Navy as a Sailor, you can:

Option 1: Pass Class 10 with any combination of subjects and join as a Matric Recruit (MR) as a 'Y' group Sailor.

Option 2: Pass Class 10 and then pass Class 11-12 with Mathematics, Physics and any one of the following - Chemistry/Biology/Computer along with any other subject as per scheme of studies. If you pass with a score below 60% in aggregate, then you can join as a Senior Secondary Recruit (SSR). SSR Recruits fall under the category of 'Y' group Sailors. But if you score a minimum of 60% marks in aggregate, you can join as an Artificer Apprentice (AA). SSR Recruits fall under the category of 'X' group Sailors.

Option 3: If you have proficiency in music (Instrumental music), you can join as a Matric Entry Musician ('Y' group of sailors).

Option 4: Candidates with secondary / higher secondary level of education with competencies in various sports (participation in international / national / state level / inter-university championships is mandatory) can be considered for entry as a Sailor – either as a Senior Secondary (SSR) recruit or as a Matric Recruit ('Y' group of sailors)depending upon their educational qualifications. If you have obtained a minimum of 6th position in a senior national level championship or 3rd position a junior national level championship or a 3rd position in an inter-university championship, then you can get a direct entry as a Petty Officer.

Career - Job Opportunities & Profiles 

1. If you are joining the Indian Navy as a Matric Recruit Sailor, then you will be placed as a Seaman II (Chef) / Seaman II (Steward) / Seaman II (Hygienist) / Seaman II (Musician).

2. If you are joing the Indian Navy as a Senior Secondary Recruit Sailor, then you will be placed as a Seaman I after 22 weeks of training.

3. If you are joing the Indian Navy as an Artificer Apprentice Sailor, then you will be placed as an Apprentice first after 9 weeks of training.

Working as an Indian Navy Sailor:

1. Your duties and responsibilities will depend upon the work area in which you join. This depends upon your educational qualifications or music/sports proficiency. You may join the Indian Navy as a sailor after passing class 10 examination as a Matric Recruit. If you pass class 11-12 with Physics and Mathematics and any one of Chemistry/Biology/Computer, then you can join as a Senior Secondary Recruit. If you can score a minimum of 60% marks in aggregate in class 11-12 final examination (with the above combination of subjects), then you can join as an Artificer Apprentice.

2. If you have talent in music or sports, then you can join as a Musician after class 10 as a Metric Recruit (Musician). If you are good in a specified sports, you can join as a Metric Recruit after class 10 or as a Senior Secondary Recruit after class 11-12. 

Following are the different roles and key tasks of sailors in Indian Navy:

1. Indian Navy Artificer (Sailors): Artificers are skilled Mechanics in Indian Navy. You will be working as a Sailor on technical duties. Technical roles in the Indian Navy are named as 'X' group of jobs.

2. Indian Navy SSR (Sailors): The SSR are the non-technical branch of Indian Navy. You will be working as a Sailor in non-technical duties. Non-technical roles in the Indian Navy are named as 'Y' group of jobs.

3. Indian Navy Matric Recruit: In this branch, you can find work as a Cook or Chef, Steward, Sanitary Hygienist, etc. As this role is a non-technical role, it falls under the 'Y' group of jobs.

4. Indian Navy Musician: In this branch, you can join as a Musician to play for the Naval Band in various occasions and ceremonies. As this role is a non-technical role, it falls under the 'Y' group of jobs.

5. Indian Navy Sportsman: You can join as a Sailor and participate in sports such as athletics, badminton, basketball, boxing, canoeing, cricket, equestrian, fencing, football, golf, gymnastics, handball, hockey, kabaddi, kayaking, polo, rowing, sailing, shooting, squash, tennis, volleyball, wind surfing, weightlifting, wrestling, etc. As this role is a non-technical role, it falls under the 'Y' group of jobs.

Specialisation Tracks In This Career

1. Indian Navy Sailor (Technical Artificer Apprentice Recruit - X Group Sailor)

You will be joining as an Artificer Apprentice. You will be working in various technical duties such as operating, maintaining and repairing engines, power systems, navigation systems, weapon systems as well as various equipment and machinery onboard of warships and submarines. You will also be working as a skilled Mechanic for maintaining Naval aircraft.

2. Indian Navy Sailor (Non-Technical SSR Recruit - Y Group Sailor)

You will be joining as a Senior Secondary Recruit. You will be involved in all sorts of non-technical duties that are required for running the warships and submarines.

3. Indian Navy Sailor (Non-technical Matric Recruit - Y Group Sailor)

In this branch, you will be working as a Cook or Chef, Kitchen Assistants, Stewards, Sanitary Hygienists, etc.

4. Indian Navy Musician (Sailor - Y Group Sailor)

As a Musician, you will be playing various instruments in the Naval Band.

5. Indian Navy Sailor (Sportsman - Y Group Sailor)

As an Indian Navy Sportsman, you will be undergoing training at various world-class training facilities of Indian Navy and participate in state, national and international competitions depending upon your proficiency. You will also be carried out other technical / non-technical / other duties as per your entry level (as an Artificer or SSR or Matric Recruit).

Salary Offered  

As a 'X' Group Sailor

1. As an 'X' group sailor, in the beginning, you will be earning in the pay scale of Rs. 5,200 - 20,000 per month. Additionally, you will be paid DA (Dearness Allowance), Grade Pay, Military Service Pay, and X Group Pay. Your total monthly remuneration will be about Rs. 42,000.

2. At a senior 'X' group Sailor, in the rank of Master Chief Petty Officers, you will be earning in the pay scale of Rs. 9,300 - 34,800 per month. Additionally, you will be paid DA (Dearness Allowance), Grade Pay, Military Service Pay, and X Group Pay. Your total monthly remuneration will be about Rs. 1,57,000.

As a 'Y' Group Sailor

1. As an 'Y' group sailor, in the beginning, you will be earning in the pay scale of Rs. 5,200 - 20,000 per month. Additionally, you will be paid DA (Dearness Allowance), Grade Pay, and Military Service Pay. Your total monthly remuneration will be about Rs. 40,000.

2. At a senior 'X' group Sailor, in the rank of Master Chief Petty Officers, you will be earning in the pay scale of Rs. 9,300 - 34,800 per month. Additionally, you will be paid DA (Dearness Allowance), Grade Pay, and Military Service Pay. Your total monthly remuneration will be about Rs. 1,53,000.

Future Prospects 

Indian Navy’s recruit a quite a sizeable large number of Sailors every year and the number of new recruitments has been growing steadily over the last decade or so. With the modern warfare and peacetime surveillance of India’s maritime border becoming more and more hi-tech, Indian Navy is expected to increase the number of new recruits in Information Technology and Technical branches.
