About Career 

overseeing naval operations1. Indian Navy’s officers and sailors protect India’s ocean borders and water territories to prevent and defeat any territorial aggression of other nations during war times. They work in close coordination with the Indian Army and Indian Air Force to defeat any attack to Indian territories, including land and sea. They also pursue India’s political and military interests such as helping another nation to protect itself from enemy attacks.

2. Ocean borders are called maritime borders, which denote limits of territorial waters. India’s ocean borders and water territories lie in the Arabian Sea, Bay of Bengal and the Indian Ocean. During peace time, that is, when there is no war, Indian Navy guards India’s maritime borders with other forces such as Indian Coast Guard and work as a deterrent to any threat of maritime aggression from other countries. Strength of Indian Navy is critically important to ensure the nation’s security objectives.

Organisation

1. Indian Navy is organised in three principal commands for protecting the water territories – The Western Naval Command based out of Mumbai, The Eastern Naval Command based out of Visakhapatnam, and the Southern Naval Command based out of Kochi.

2. Besides these Command Centres, Indian Navy also have bases at various ports such as Kandla, Mumbai, JNPT, Kolkata-Haldia, Paradip, Visakhapatnam, Chennai, etc. These ports are used by merchant navy ships and passenger cruises. Merchant Navy ships include goods carriers and oil carriers. These ships use various sea routes, guarding and protection of which are also the responsibility of the Indian Navy.

Indian Navy Fleet

Indian Navy’s fleet include aircraft carriers, landing ship tanks, destroyers, frigates, corvettes, offshore petrol vessels, nuclear submarines and other submarines. Indian Navy also operate various types of aircraft called naval aircrafts from a number of naval air stations.  

Indian Navy’s Weapon Systems

Indian Navy operates sophisticated weapon systems such as ballistic missiles, cruise and anti-ship missiles, air to air missiles, surface to air missiles, torpedoes, anti-submarines rocket launchers, etc.

After your Class 11-12 Physics and Mathematics along with any other subject as per scheme of studies, you can appear for the National Defence Academy (NDA)/Naval Academy (NA) entrance examination. Depending upon your performance, you may have to study at the National Defence Academy for a 3-year program and thereafter undergo 1-year pre-commissioning training at the Naval Academy. You may also get a chance to study for a 4-year B.Tech. program at Naval Academy. Your first posting will be as Sub-Lieutenant in the Indian Navy.

Class 10 all subjects as per scheme of studies - Class 11-12 Physics and Mathematics along with any other subject as per scheme of studies - IIT JEE Mains Examination - B.Tech. in Naval Academy - Permanent Commission as a Sub-Lieutenant

After your Class 11-12 Physics and Mathematics along with any other subject as per scheme of studies, you can appear for the IIT JEE Mains examination. Depending upon your performance, you may get a chance to study at the Naval Academy. You also have to score at least 70% marks in aggregate with Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics and at least 50% in English in 10+2 examination. The program of study is a 4-year B.Tech. program. After completion of the program, your first posting will be as Sub-Lieutenant in the Indian Navy.

Thereafter, you can appear for the UPSC conducted CDSE (Combined Defence Services Examination) examination. If you qualify for joining the Indian Navy, you will have to undergo a pre-commissioning training at the Naval Academy. On successful completion of the training, you will be commissioned as a Permanent or Short Service Commission Officer in the rank of a Sub-Lieutenant in the Executive (General Services) branch.

In the final year of your study, you can be placed in the Indian Navy through the University Entry Scheme. If you are selected, after your degree, you can obtain a pre-commissioning training at the Naval Academy and on completion of the training, you can be commissioned as a Permanent or Short Service Commission Officer in the rank of a Sub-Lieutenant. For getting into IT branch or the Engineering branch of the Navy, you should have a B.E./B.Tech. in Computer Engineering/IT (for IT branch) or have a B.E./B.Tech. in Mechanical/Marine/ Instrumentation/ Production/Aeronautical/ Industrial / Instrumentation & Control / Aerospace / Automobiles/ Metallurgy / Mechatronics Engineering (for Engineering branch). If you have a B.E./B.Tech. in any other stream, you can join the Executive (General Services) branch.

If you successfully complete the training, you will be commissioned as a Short Service Commission Officer in the rank of a Sub-Lieutenant in the Navy's IT branch.

Class 10 all subjects as per scheme of studies - Class 11-12 with any subject as per scheme of studies - a Bachelor's degree in Law - Direct Entry through SSB Interviews - Training at Naval Academy - Short Service Commission as a Sub-Lieutenant

After your class 11-12 with any subjects and Mathematics, you can enroll for a 5-year integrated degree in Law. Then you can directly apply and go through the Service Selection Board interviews. If you are selected you will have to undergo a pre-commissioning training program at the Indian Naval Academy. If you successfully complete the training, you will be commissioned as a Short Service Commission Officer in the rank of a Sub-Lieutenant in the Navy's Law branch. Alternatively, you can first do a Bachelor's degree and then do a 3-year LL.B. Then you can appear for the Service Selection Board interviews.

Class 10 all subjects as per scheme of studies - Class 11-12 Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics along with any other subject as per scheme of studies - Graduation in Science/Humanities/Computer Science - Post Graduation - Direct Entry through SSB Interviews - Training at Naval Academy - Permanent or Short Service Commission in the rank of Sub-Lieutenant

After your Class 11-12 Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics along with any other subject as per scheme of studies, you can do a Bachelor's degree in Mathematics (with Physics), Physics (with Mathematics), Chemistry (With Physics), Computer Science, Computer Engineering, IT, Electrical Engineering, Electronics Engineering or in English. Then you should do a Master's degree in areas such as (depending upon your Bachelor's degree) - Mathematics, Operations Research, Nuclear Physics, Physics, Chemistry, MCA, IT, Computer Science, Computer Science and Engineering, English, etc. After your PG degree, you can directly appear for the SSB (Service Selection Board) interviews. If you are selected, you will have to undergo a pre-commissioning training at the Naval Academy. On successful completion of your training, you will be commissioned as a Permanent or Short Service Commission Officer in the rank of a Sub-Lieutenant.

Class 10 all subjects as per scheme of studies - Class 11-12 with any subject as per scheme of studies - Bachelor's degree in Economics/History/Political Science - Master's degree in Economics/History/Political Science - Direct Entry through SSB Interviews - Training at Naval Academy - Permanent Commission in the rank of a Sub-Lieutenant

After your Class 11-12 in any stream and a Bachelor's degree in Economics/History/Political Science, you can first do a Master's degree in Economics/History/Political Science and then directly appear for the SSB (Service Selection Board) interviews. If you are selected, you have to undergo a pre-commissioning training at the Naval Academy. After successful completion of your training, you can be commissioned as a Permanent Commission Officer in the rank of a Sub-Lieutenant in the Education branch.

Class 10 all subjects as per scheme of studies - Class 11-12 Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics along with any other subject as per scheme of studies or any subject as per scheme of studies - B.Sc. in IT/ Physics/Chemistry/Mathematics / Other Sciences with Physics or Mathematics or B.Com. - PG Diploma in Finance / Logistics / Supply Chain Management / Materials Management or MBA - Direct Entry through SSB Interviews - Trainign at Naval Academy - Short Service Commission in the rank of a Sub-Lieutenant

After your Class 10, you can complete your Class 11-12 Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics along with any other subject as per scheme of studies or any subject as per scheme of studies or in Commerce as per scheme of studies . Thereafter depending on your Class 11-12 stream, you can first obtain a Bachelor's degree in IT/ Physics / Chemistry / Mathematics / or in any Science with Physics or Mathematics as a subject or a Bachelor's degree in Commerce with Accountancy or Finance and Accountancy. Then you either do an MBA or PG Diploma in Finance / Logistics / Supply Chain Management / Materials Management. Then you can directly appear for the SSB (Service Selection Board) interviews. If you are selected, you will have to undergo a pre-commissioning training at the Naval Academy. Post your successful training, you will be commissioned as a Short Service Commission Officer in the rank of a Sub-Lieutenant in the Logistics branch.

Class 10 all subjects as per scheme of studies - Class 11-12 Physics, Chemistry and Biology along with any other subject as per scheme of studies - MBBS from AFMC or other colleges - Direct Entry into Armed Forces Medical Services or Army Dental Corps

Option 1: AFMC Cadet Entry – you can sit for an all Indian entrance examination after your 10+2 education with Physics, Chemistry and Biology (obtaining at least 60% marks in aggregate, not less than 50% marks in any of these three subjects and not less than 50% marks in English) to get admission into the MBBS program of the Armed Forces Medical College, Pune. After completion of MBBS and 1-year compulsory internship, you will be joining as an Officer in the Armed Forces Medical Services (AFMS). The Medical (Officer) branch of Indian Navy is included in the AFMS. Option 2: Direct Entry as a Permanent Commissioned Officer into the AFMS – after your MBBS / MD / Post Graduate Diploma from an Indian or foreign medical college recognised by the Medical Council of India, you can get an option of joining the Armed Forces Medical Services (AFMS) directly. Option 3: Direct Entry as a Permanent Commissioned Officer into the Army Dental Corps – after your BDS / MDS from a dental college recognised by the Dental Council of India, you can get an option of joining the Army Dental Corps directly. Army Dental Corps includes the Dental branch of Indian Navy.

Class 10 all subjects as per scheme of studies - NCC 'A' Certificate - Class 11-12 Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics along with any other subject as per scheme of studies - NCC 'B' Certificate - Bachelor's degree in any stream preferably in Science/Engineering/IT - NCC 'C' Certificate - Training at Naval Academy - Permanent Commission as a Sub-Lieutenant in a branch

Candidates, who have NCC ‘C’ Certificates (Naval Wing), can become directly eligible for SSB interviews. They also should have a Bachelor’s Degree in any discipline, preferably in Engineering or Science (Physics/Mathematics/Chemistry/Computer Science/Information Technology) or Computer Applications. After 18-month’s training at Indian Naval Academy, they are absorbed as a Sub-Lieutenant in different branches for the Officers.

Class 10 all subjects as per scheme of studies - Class 11-12 in Science Stream with Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics or in any other stream - Bachelor's degree in any stream - Participation in select sports and games all along from school level to national/international level - SSB Interviews - Training at Naval Academy - Permanent or Short Service Commission as a Sub-Lieutenant

If you have participated in international / senior national level championships in athletics / cross-country race / triathlon / badminton / tennis / squash / football / handball / hockey / basketball / volleyball / cricket / swimming / diving / water polo / kabaddi / boxing / etc., and you have a Bachelor’s degree, you can be considered for an entry as an Officer through SSB interviews. If you have secured a minimum of 5th position in an Olympic pass in senior national level championships in Yachting / Wind Surfing, then you can get a direct entry as an Officer.

Class 10 all subjects as per scheme of studies - Class 11-12 Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics along with any other subject as per scheme of studies or any subject as per scheme of studies - Bachelor's degree in any subject or in Performing Arts/Music - Training in musical instrument from school level and completion of a Diploma in Music (for graduates other than in Performing Arts) - SSB Interviews - Training at Naval Academy - Short Service Commission as a Sub-Lieutenant in Music Branch

If you are competent to play at least one military band musical instrument in addition to Piano-Forte, then you can be eligible for an entry as an Officer in the Music branch. You should have a Diploma in a Musical Instrument.

Required Qualification & Competencies 

1. For most of the positions as Officers, Indian Navy wants you to have a Bachelor of Engineering or Bachelor of Technology degree.

2.However, certain positions in Officer ranks are open for Bachelor’s in Information Technology, Computer Applications, and Law.

3. Post Graduates in various Science streams such as Physics, Mathematics, Chemistry, Nuclear Physics, Operations Research, Information Technology, Computer Science, Computer Applications and M.Tech. in Computer Science or Engineering can also get entry as an Officer in Indian Navy in a few branches.

4. Post Graduates in Humanities and Liberal Arts streams such as in English, History and Economics can get an entry as an Officer in the Education branch.

5. Those from Commerce stream can do an MBA / PG Diploma in Finance, Logistics, Supply Chain Management or Materials Management / Bachelor in Law (B.A. LL.B., B.Com. LL.B., or BBA LL.B.) to get an entry into the Logistics branch as an Officer.

6. Science graduates can also do an MBA or PG Diploma in Finance, Logistics, Supply Chain Management or Materials Management to get an entry into the Logistics branch as an Officer.

Entry Level

At the minimum level, as a Sub-Lieutenant, you will be earning in a pay scale of Rs. 56,100-1,10,700 per month along with a Military Service Pay of Rs. 15,500. Your minimum gross remuneration at this level would be approximately Rs. 81,000 per month.

Mid-level

As a Commander after 8-10 years of service, you will be earning in a pay scale of Rs. 1,21,200 – 2,12,400 per month plus the Military Service Pay of Rs. 15,500. Your minimum gross remuneration at this level would be approximately 1,50,000 per month.

Senior Level

At a senior level, your pay could be about Rs. 2,25,000 per month. For the Chief of Naval Staff of India, the pay is fixed at Rs. 2,50,000 per month
