Who is Eligible

Class 10th Pass


1. Your work roles in the Indian Army will be determined by the Corps to which you are attached and by your rank. These Corps are functionally diverse and are specialized work divisions of the Indian Army. Broadly, Corps have 3 classes – Strike, Holding and Mixed.

2. Junior Commissioned Officers include the ranks Naib Subedar/Risaldar, Subedar/Risaldar, Subedar/Risaldar Major. Other Ranks include Sepoy (Soldier), Naik and Havildar. These are collectively referred to as PBOR or ‘Personnel below Officer Rank’.

3. As a serviceman in the ranks of PBOR of the Indian Army, you may be involved in protecting the nation from external threats and preventing from present and future external threats. Indian Army protects India’s territories and defends the country’s people from territorial aggression of other nations during war time.

4. You may be involved in protecting the nation from internal threats and preventing from present and future internal threats. Indian Army defends the country from terrorists and armed anti-national groups.

5. You may be involved in helping other nations. Indian Army has been a part of United Nation Peacekeeping Forces which is generally deployed when required in various countries to protect the countries from internal or external threats, mostly internal threats from civil wars, acts of terrorism, etc.

6. You may be involved in helping people in their hour of crisis, in India or abroad. Be it crisis arising from natural calamities such as flood and tornadoes or major accidents such as fire and bridge collapse which require search and rescue, relief operations, evacuation, emergency construction of infrastructure, etc., Indian Army is pressed into service.

7. You can join the Indian Army as a Permanent Commission or Short Service Commission Officer, Junior Commissioned Officer (JCO), Havildar or as a Soldier. Short Service Commission (SSC) is for 14 years (initially for 10 years and then extendable up to another 4 years). Permanent Commissions is for lifetime till your age of retirement.

8. Officers, Soldiers and other ranked personnel of these Corps are deployed under six field operational commands (Central, Eastern, Western, Northern, Southern, South Western) or the training command or other strategic force commands or Army institutions. Higher ranked Officers are also placed sometimes at the Army Headquarters in Delhi.

Key Roles and Responsibilities:

As an Indian Army Officer in various official capacities (depending on which Corps you are attached to) you will be engaged with one or more of the following roles responsibilities and many others: -

1. You will be deployed in various strategic locations across the country to act as a deterrent and prevent possible and potential territorial aggression from another nation.

2. You will have to fight to defend and protect the country or its allies from territorial aggression of other nations, such as the recent stand-off at Doklam with Chinese troops.

3. You will be deployed as part of United Nation’s peacekeeping forces in various countries, mostly in the African countries and protect the countries from internal or external threats, from terrorist activities and civil wars.

4. You will be deployed in disturbed locations across the country to fight acts of terrorist groups or armed anti-national groups such as Naxals and to prevent such acts.

5. You may be part of battalions deployed to assist any Indian state or territory to deal with large scale riots, arson and similar situations.

6. You will be deployed in any Indian state or regions under the AFSPA (Armed Forces Special Powers Act) which are areas disturbed with a very high degree of terror activities and political unrests – such as in the State of Manipur and Jammu & Kashmir.

7. You will get engaged in search and rescue, relief operations and emergency construction activities during large-scale natural calamities such as flood, earthquake, tsunami, tornadoes, etc. or large-scale accidents such as fire, collapse of bridges, plane crash, etc.

8. You may be deployed when required in various countries to protect them from internal or external threats, mostly internal threats from civil wars, acts of terrorism, etc.

Career Entry Pathway 

Class 8 in school - ITI Training & Certification in select trades - Physical Fitness and Medical Test/Written Test, Physical Fitness and Medical Test

After completing Class 8 in school, you can undergo training at any Industrial Training Institute (ITI), National Skill Training Institute (NSTI), Regional Vocational Training Institute (RVTI), National Vocational Training Institute (NVTI), Industrial Training Center (ITC), Workshop Training Institute (WTI) or other vocational institutes for select trades. Then you will have to undergo combinations of Written Test, Physical Fitness and Medical Tests to get selected to join as Soldier Tradesman (All Corps except as Syce-Stable Hand or Horse Keeper, Mess Keeper, Housekeeper). You can also join directly after Class 8 without ITI training but only as Soldier Tradesman (Syce-Stable Hand or Horse Keeper, Mess Keeper or Housekeeper).

Class 10 all subjects as per scheme of studies - Diploma in Mechanical/ Electrical / Automobile/ Computer Science/ Electronics & Instrumentation or ITI Training & Certification in select trades - Written Test, Physical Fitness and Medical Test

After completing Class 10, you can either go for a Diploma or vocational training. Diploma can be done in disciplines like Mechanical/ Electrical / Automobile/ Computer Science/ Electronics & Instrumentation. Vocational training can be undertaken at any Industrial Training Institute (ITI), National Skill Training Institute (NSTI), Regional Vocational Training Institute (RVTI), National Vocational Training Institute (NVTI), Industrial Training Center (ITC), Workshop Training Institute (WTI) or other vocational institutes for select trades. Then you will have to undergo Written Test, Physical Fitness and Medical Tests and get selected to join as Soldier Tradesman (All Corps except Syce-Stable Hand or Horse Keeper, Mess Keeper, Housekeeper) or Soldier Technical (Aviation/Ammunition Examiner). You can also join directly after Class 10 without ITI or Diploma but only as Soldier General Duty.

Class 10 - Class 11-12 - Written Test, Physical Fitness and Medical Test

After completing Class 10, then Class 11-12, you can join directly through Written Test, Physical Fitness and Medical Test. You can join as Soldier Clerk, Soldier Store Keeper Technical, Soldier Technical in Artillery, Army Air Defence, Aviation & Ammunition Examination Departments or Soldier Nursing Assistant in Medical / Veterinary Corps. You will have to go through Written Test, Physical Fitness and Medical Test.

Class 10 - Class 11-12 - Diploma in Pharmacy - Written Test, Physical Fitness and Medical Test

After completing 11-12, you can either go for a Diploma in Pharmacy or join directly through Written Test, Physical Fitness and Medical Test. If you can complete your Diploma you can join as a Sepoy Pharma Whether Diploma or not, you will have to go through Written Test, Physical Fitness and Medical Test.

Class 10 – Class 11-12 – Graduation in any subject - Written Test, Physical Fitness and Medical Test

After completing Class 11-12 then your Bachelor degree in any subject, you can join the forces through as a Soldier Clerk, Soldier Store Keeper Technical or Havildar (Education) Group Y. Written Test, Physical Fitness and Medical Tests are mandatory prior to selection.

Class 10 – Class 11-12 – Graduation in any subject - Written Test, Physical Fitness and Medical Test

After completing Class 11-12 then your Bachelor degree in any subject, you can join the forces through as a Soldier Clerk, Soldier Store Keeper Technical or Havildar (Education) Group Y. If you have a B. Sc (Bachelor of Science) degree with Botany / Zoology / Bioscience and English, you can join as a Soldier Nursing Assistant (Medical / Veterinary Corps). Written Test, Physical Fitness and Medical Tests are mandatory prior to selection.

Class 10 – Class 11-12 – Graduation in any subject - Written Test, Physical Fitness and Medical Test

After completing Class 11-12 then your Bachelor degree in any subject, you can join the forces through as a Soldier Clerk, Soldier Store Keeper Technical or Havildar (Education) Group Y. If you have a B. Pharm. (Bachelor in Pharmacy) with at least 50% marks in aggregate, you can join as a Sepoy Pharma. Written Test, Physical Fitness and Medical Tests are mandatory prior to selection.

Class 10 – Class 11-12 – Graduation in any subject - Written Test, Physical Fitness and Medical Test

After completing Class 11-12 then your Bachelor degree in any subject, you can join the forces through as a Soldier Clerk, Soldier Store Keeper Technical or Havildar (Education) Group Y. If you have a B. Ed (Bachelor of Education) degree or M.A. (Master of Arts) in Mathematics, English, Hindi, Urdu, History, Geography, Political Science, Economics, Psychology, Sociology or MCA (Master of Computer Application) / M.Sc. (Master of Science) IT (Information Technology) after your graduation you can join as Havildar (Education) Group X. Written Test, Physical Fitness and Medical Tests are mandatory prior to selection.

Class 10 – Class 11-12 – B. Sc./BCA / B.Sc. IT - Physical Fitness Test, Written Test, Teaching Aptitude Test, Interview and Medical Test

After completing Class 11-12, you can go for a graduation course specifically B. Sc. (Bachelor of Science) or BCA (Bachelor or Computer Applications). After your graduation, you can directly join the forces as Havildar (Education) Group Y. You will have to undertake Physical Fitness Test, Written Test, Teaching Aptitude Test, Interview and Medical Tests.

Class 10 – Class 11-12 – B. Sc./BCA / B.Sc. IT - MCA / M.Sc. IT / M. Sc./ B. Ed. - Physical Fitness Test, Written Test, Teaching Aptitude Test, Interview and Medical Test

After completing Class 11-12, you can go for a graduation course specifically B. Sc. (Bachelor of Science) or BCA (Bachelor or Computer Applications). You can complete a post-graduation course specifically MCA (Master of Computer Applications) / M.Sc. IT (Master of Science - Information Technology) / M. Sc. (Master of Science) / B. Ed. (Bachelor of Education). M. Sc courses can be in disciplines like Biology, Botany, Zoology, Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics, Electronics, Computer Science or related. After you’re post-graduation you can join as Havildar (Education) Group X. Whether graduation or post-graduation, you will have to undertake Physical Fitness Test, Written Test, Teaching Aptitude Test, Interview and Medical Tests.

Class 10 – Class 11-12 - B.A. / B.Sc. in Mathematics - Physical Fitness Test, Written Test, Teaching Aptitude Test, Interview and Medical Test

After completing Class 11-12, you can complete your graduation course specifically B.A. (Bachelor of Arts)/ B.Sc. (Bachelor of Science) in Mathematics. Then you have to undergo Physical Fitness Test, Written Test, Teaching Aptitude Test, Interview and Medical Tests to be selected to join as Havildar (Automated Cartographer).

Class 10 – Class 11-12 - B.E./ B.Tech. in Computer Science / Electronics - Physical Fitness Test, Written Test, Teaching Aptitude Test, Interview and Medical Test

After completing Class 11-12 then B.E. (Bachelor of Engineering) / B.Tech. (Bachelor of Technology) in Computer Science / Electronics, you can join the forces as a Havildar (Education) Group Y. You will mandatorily undergo Physical Fitness Test, Written Test, Teaching Aptitude Test, Interview and Medical Tests to be selected.

Class 10 – Class 11-12 - B.E./ B.Tech. in Computer Science / Electronics - M.E. / M.Tech. - Physical Fitness Test, Written Test, Teaching Aptitude Test, Interview and Medical Test

After completing Class 11-12 then B.E. (Bachelor of Engineering) / B.Tech. (Bachelor of Technology) in Computer Science / Electronics, you can go for a Master degree in your respective field or directly. If you can complete a Master degree (M. E. –Master of Engineering or M. Tech – Master of Technology) course in Computer Science / Electronics you can join the forces as Havildar (Education) Group X. You will mandatorily undergo Physical Fitness Test, Written Test, Teaching Aptitude Test, Interview and Medical Tests to be selected.

Class 10 – Class 11-12 - Diploma / Certificate Course / graduation in any subject - Physical Fitness Test, Written Test, Interview and Medical Test

After completing Class 11-12, you can complete a Diploma or Certificate course or graduation in any discipline and join the forces as Junior Commissioned Officer (JCO) Catering (Army Service Corps). Diploma or Certificate courses should be of duration of 1 year or more in Cookery / Hotel Management and Catering Technology from a recognized University / Food Craft Institute. AICTE recognition is not mandatory. Whether Diploma / Certificate / graduation, you will have to mandatorily undergo Physical Fitness Test, Written Test, Interview and Medical Tests to be selected.

Class 10 – Class 11-12 - Diploma / Certificate Course / graduation in any subject - Master Degree / Diploma / Certificate / Other qualifications in religion such as Hinduism, Islam, Christianity - Physical Fitness Test, Written Test, Interview and Medical Test

After completing Class 11-12, you can complete a Diploma or Certificate course or graduation in any discipline. Diploma or Certificate courses should be of duration of 1 year or more in Cookery / Hotel Management and Catering Technology from a recognized University / Food Craft Institute. AICTE recognition is not mandatory. If you can complete your graduation in any discipline and then complete post graduation (Diploma / Certificate / Master degree / Other qualifications) in religion such as Hinduism, Islam, Christianity, etc., you can join the forces as Junior Commissioned Officer (JCO) Religious Teacher (All Corps). Whether Diploma / Certificate / graduation, you will have to mandatorily undergo Physical Fitness Test, Written Test, Interview and Medical Tests to be selected.

Class 10 – join through special entry for sportspersons as Havildar or Naib Subedar or Soldier

After completing Class 11-12, you can join as Havildar Group ‘Y’ (Non-Technical Trades) directly after passing physical fitness test, sports skill trials and medical examination if you are established as a sportsperson and have represented the country in Junior/Senior sports meets. You should be a national/international level sportsperson. Completion of studies till Class 11-12 is not mandatory for International/National Level Athletes who have secured some positions in such sporting events. However, this is subject to verification of all relevant sports credentials & performance during selection trials. The disciplines are restricted to (a) Athletics (b) Basketball (c) Boxing (d) Cricket (e) Diving (f) Golf (g) Gymnastics (h) Hockey (j) Kabaddi (k) Lawn Tennis (l) Squash (m) Swimming (n) Volleyball (o) Water Polo (p) Weight Lifting (q) Wrestling (r) Wushu. The latest achievements would be given preference during the selection trials. It will be better if you have already represented the Services team at least twice in three years in National championship events.

Class 10 – Class 11-12 - join through special entry for sportspersons as Havildar or Naib Subedar or Soldier

After completing Class 11-12, you can join as Havildar Group ‘Y’ (Non-Technical Trades) directly after passing physical fitness test, sports skill trials and medical examination if you are established as a sportsperson and have secured positions in Local/District/State/National level sporting events. Required Qualification & Competencies 

1. For joining Indian Army in the ranks of PBOR (Personnel Below Officers Rank) including JCO/OR (Junior Commissioned Officer/Other Ranks), you can have any level of education starting from Class 8 to Post Graduation.

2. After Class 8 you can directly join the forces as Soldier Tradesmen (Syce, Mess Keeper and House Keeper). Your age should be within 17 ½ - 23 Yrs.

After Class 10 with or without English as a compulsory subject, you can:

1. Directly join the forces.

2. Go for ITI/NSQF/MES/CTS or any other vocational training courses.

3. Go for Diploma/Certificate courses.

4. Go for 5 year B. Voc (Bachelor of Vocation) degree courses.

5. Complete Class 11-12.

After Class 11-12, you can:

1. Directly join the forces.

2. Go for 3 year B. Voc (Bachelor of Vocation) degree courses.

3. Go for B. Sc /BA / B.C. A / B Sc (IT) degree courses.

4. Go for D. Pharma or B. Pharma courses.

5. Diploma in Hotel Management and Catering Technology.

After graduation, you can:

Specialisation Tracks In This Career 

1. Indian Army Soldier / Havildar / JCO (Armoured Corps)

This is a combat arm of the Army. Officers, soldiers and others of this Corps engage in frontal battles on field using armoured vehicles such as tanks and other vehicles fitted with various weapon systems and supplies as well as various types of rapid movement vehicles.

2. Indian Army Soldier / Havildar / JCO (Army Aviation Corps)

This Corps is engaged in supporting the on field Armoured Corps and Artillery Corps by attacking enemy locations with armed helicopters. They also carry out crucial logistical, transportation and combat search and rescue operations. This Corps are also used in rescue and relief missions during natural calamities and other national emergency situations such as a terrorist attack.

3. Indian Army Soldier / Havildar / JCO (Corps of Engineers)

The Corps of Engineers are primarily engaged in two functions. During wartime, they build roads, bridges, helipads, and other installations to help military operations as well as build obstacles for enemy forces or destroy enemy infrastructure. In the other role, in Military Engineering Services, the Corps of Engineer is involved in design, construction and maintenance of barracks, work places, buildings, airfields, and other installations.

4. Indian Army Soldier / Havildar / JCO (Corps of Signals)

The Corps of Signals are involved in managing all communication needs of the Army. They operate all communication equipment, systems, hardware, software and processes. They deal with sophisticated electronic equipment and help the Army by intercepting enemy communication and conveying own information without being detected by the enemy forces.

5. Indian Army Soldier / Havildar / JCO (Infantry)

This consists of the foot soldiers and their officers, involved in field battles alongside Armoured Corps, Artillery, Mechanised Infantry and Air Defence Corps. The infantry is divided into various Regiments such as the Parachute Regiment, The Grenadiers, The Rajputana Rifles, The Sikh Regiment, Gorkha Rifles, etc.

6. Indian Army Soldier / Havildar / JCO (Ordnance Corps)

The Ordnance Corps is responsible for providing materials and logistical support to the field combat forces of the Army during wartime as well as in peacetime or in natural calamities or emergencies. Materials include all items right from arms and ammunition to sophisticated weapon systems and other military combat materials.

7. Indian Army Soldier / Havildar / JCO (Army Education Corps)

This Corps is responsible for all training and education of the personnel of the Indian Army.

8. Indian Army Soldier / Havildar / JCO (Military Police Corps)

This Corps is responsible for maintaining law and order situations inside the Army establishments such as barracks, garrisons, cantonments and campuses. They deal with breaches of the Army rules and regulations as well as the laws of the land. During wartime they also take care of the Prisoners of War (PoW).

9. Indian Army Soldier / Havildar / JCO (Army Intelligence Corps)

This Corps is responsible for handling intelligence operations during war and peacetime as well as counter-espionage operations in enemy territories. This Corps works are the secret service of the Army.

10. Indian Army Soldier / Havildar / JCO (Army Medical Corps)

This Corps is responsible for providing medical and healthcare services to all Army personnel. They are Physicians and Surgeons engaged in different Army hospitals and healthcare facilities. In wartime, they accompany forces in warzones

11. Indian Army Soldier / Havildar / JCO (Judge Advocate General's Department Services)

This is the judicial service of the Indian Army. Judge Advocate General is a judicial services head of the Indian Army. In this department there are Army Lawyers who are commissioned officers. Army Lawyers help the Army and it’s personnel in legal matters.

12. Indian Army Soldier / Havildar / JCO (Army Remount and Veterinary Corps)

This Corps is responsible for breeding, raring, upkeep, training and treatment of all the animals used in the army such as dogs and horses.

13. Indian Army Soldier / Havildar / JCO (Army Corps of Electrical and Mechanical Engineers)

Army Engineers in this Corps are responsible for design, develop, test, deploy or commission, repair and maintain all weapon systems, electrical and mechanical equipment and systems in the Indian Army.

14. Indian Army Soldier / Havildar / JCO (Indian Army Commandos)

Besides Corps, Indian Army also has Para Forces, which are special commando forces. Commandos forces consists of personnel drawn from various Corps, specially Infantry and are specially trained for unconventional warfare. Being in the Para Forces, you will get an exposure of serving / training with foreign Armies. Remember, only motivated and volunteer soldiers already in active service can exercise the option of joining the PARA Regiment. If you successfully pass the physical fitness tests and written test for the ELITE forces, you will have an option to join the PARA training prior to your dispatch.

Career Growth

1. The hierarchy of ranks in ascension among PBORs is as follows: Sepoy (Soldier), Naik, Havildar, Naib Subedar, Subedar, Subedar Major, Honorary Lieutenant and Honorary Captain.

2. Promotion of PBORs to the rank of Havildar and Naib Subedar is based on success in promotion examinations and completion of minimum length of service.

3. Policy for further promotions of PBORs to the rank of Subedar and Subedar Major is on the basis of merit-cum-seniority.

4. Honorary Commission is granted either on Republic Day and Independence Day each year to selected PBORs. On grant of Honorary Commission, they are eligible for higher scales of pay and allowances. Honorary ranks among PBORs are Honorary Lieutenant and Honorary Captain.

5. Remustering is a process of change of trade (also from one pay group to another pay group) during the career of JCO/ORs. The individual can opt for remustering as a means of career progression or due to medical problems.

6. The Indian Army has earned its name in various peacekeeping missions around the world and is therefore tasked for many such missions abroad. There are postings to various countries on different assignments. The selection criteria are strictly as per merit. Para Commando Forces are also trained with foreign army units.

7. Post-Retirement benefits include Ex-Servicemen Contributory Health Scheme (ECHS), pension, and gratuity. SpecificPre-Release Courses (PRC) are also arranged to enable Airmento take up careerspost their retirement. Besides, Airmen also get relaxation in age and reservation in government services as ex-servicemen.

The various types of pensionary awards admissible to PBORs are:

1. Service Pension.

2. Service Gratuity.

3. Retirement/Death Gratuity.

4. Disability Pension.

5. Constant Attendance Allowance.

6. Invalid Pension/Gratuity.

7. War Injury Pension.

8. Ordinary Family Pension.

9. Special Family Pension.

10. Liberalized Family Pension.

11. Special Pension/Gratuity.

All promotions are based on time in service and clearance of departmental examinations. Due to few vacancies and steep hierarchy, PBORs mostly retire at the rank of Naib Subedar and only some make it to the levels of Subedar and above.

Salary Offered  

1. According to the 7th Central Pay Commission (CPC), following is the salary structure for entry level pay of direct recruits to a particular rank. The figures include revised MSP (Military Service Pay) rate of Rs. 5200/month. Existing rate of MSP was Rs. 2000/month. JCOs are class II gazetted Officers.

2. All increments are extended to PBORs on 1st day of July every year. Promotions to higher ranks may occur at other times too. However, increments corresponding to a promotion will be realized from the date of your next increment, i.e 1st day of July of next year.

3. Sepoys (Soldiers) may expect around Rs 26900 as the starting basic pay a month. 

4. Naiks may expect around Rs 30700 as the starting basic pay a month.

5. Havaldars may expect around Rs 34400 as the starting basic pay a month.

6. Naib Subedars may expect around Rs 40600 as the starting basic pay a month.

7. Subedars may expect around Rs 50100 as the starting basic pay a month.

8. Subedar Majors may expect around Rs 52800 as the starting basic pay a month.

9. Honorary Lieutenant may expect around Rs 62100 as the starting basic pay a month.

10. Honorary Captain may expect around Rs 67300 as the starting basic pay a month.

11. Perks such as clothing, ration, accommodation, medical facilities, transport for school going children, canteen facilities, recreational facilities, leave (60 days annual and 30 days casual in a calendar year)and Leave Travel Concession (LTC) are also provided as per the existing rules. Facilities of Group Housing Scheme and Group Insurance Cover of Rs. 37.5 Lakhs at a premium of Rs. 2300/- per month are also there for all PBOR.

12. Allowances such as Transport allowance, Leave Ration allowance (LRA), Children Education Allowance, Composite personal maintenance allowance (CPMA), HRA etc. are there.

Gallantry awards have the following rates per month.

1. Param Vir Chakra (PVC) – Rs. 10000

2. Ashok Chakra (AC) – Rs. 6000

3. Mahavir Chakra (MV) – Rs. 5000

4. Kirti Chakra (KC) – Rs. 4000

5. Vir Chakra (VrC) – Rs. 3000

6. Shaurya Chakra (SC) – Rs. 3000

7. Sena/Nao Sena/Vayu Sena Medal – Rs. 1000

Future Prospects 

Indian Armed Forces are one of the best training grounds for developing top management skills. Officers retired after the Short Service Commission, find very good opportunities in various senior level roles in different private sector organizations according to their expertise and training. Short Service Commission (for a maximum of 14 years) is one of the best possible ways to acquire leadership qualities which are very useful for various industries worldwide. Ex-servicemen are absorbed in top positions across all sectors of the industry with special reservations and relaxations. Training is being aimed to make an Indian Army Soldier tech-smart in future. The Indian Army is steadily planning to implement a major change to make its units “light, rapidly deployable and more lethal”. All life skills acquired through training and experience during active service in the Armed Forces will enable you to be ahead of others in all walks of life and in all respects.
