As a Civil Draughtsman or Draftsman, you will be assisting civil engineers in planning out projects. You will mainly be converting their ideas into drawings or maps. Earlier, the designs were drawn on paper but now you will mainly use AutoCAD which is a commercial software application for computer-aided design and drafting. You may also need to use dividers, compasses, protractors or other devices while drawing by hands.
Your drawings will include buildings, roads, machines, bridges, highways, flood control projects, pipelines, water or drainage systems etc. You will be responsible for drawing specific details to architectural plans. Engineers and architects will give you rough sketches and specifications. You will be working under their supervision. You may have to regularly improve your designs and drawings according to changes suggested by your supervisors.
Key Roles and Responsibilities:
As a Civil Draughtsman or Draftsman, you will be engaged with one or more of the following roles and responsibilities: -
1. Producing detailed drawings, graphical models (3D/2D) using various software such as AutoCAD, Revit, etc.
2. Reviewing rough sketches or drawings received from civil engineers.
3. Drawing maps or drafting plans for buildings, highways, factories, sewage systems, bridges, dams, and various other civil structures.
4. Travelling to sites and surveying land or water bodies for measuring or determining their features and dimensions
5. Explaining engineering drawings or related technical descriptions.
6. Helping to estimate the technical resources required for different projects.
7. Preparing official documents related to various projects.
8. Making cost estimates as per the drawings for different projects.
9. Supervising other junior technical personnel.

After Class 10, you can obtain a National Skill Qualification Framework (NSQF) Level 5 Training and Certificate for ‘Draughtsman – Civil’ or similar courses. The total number of training hours is 4160.
Class 10 all subjects as per scheme of studies - NSQF Level 5 Certificate for ‘Draughtsman – Civil’ or similar courses– Admission to 2nd yr of Diploma in Civil Engineering
After Class 10, you can obtain a National Skill Qualification Framework (NSQF) Level 5 Training and Certificate for ‘Draughtsman – Civil’ or similar courses. The total number of training hours is 4160.Then you can go get direct admission (lateral entry) to 2nd year of Diploma in Civil Engineering.

After Class 10, you can go for training at any Industrial Training Institute (ITI), National Skill Training Institute (NSTI), Regional Vocational Training Institute (RVTI), National Vocational Training Institute (NVTI), Industrial Training Center (ITC) or other vocational institutes for the role of ‘Draughtsman (Civil)’. This is a 2-year training course with 4 semesters (6 months each).

After Class 10, you can go for training at any Industrial Training Institute (ITI), National Skill Training Institute (NSTI), Regional Vocational Training Institute (RVTI), National Vocational Training Institute (NVTI), Industrial Training Center (ITC) or other vocational institutes for the role of ‘Draughtsman (Civil)’. This is a 2-year training course with 4 semesters (6 months each). Then you can obtain a National Skill Qualification Framework (NSQF) Level 5 Training and Certificate for ‘Draughtsman – Civil’ or similar courses. The total number of training hours is 4160
Class 10 all subjects as per scheme of studies – Class 11-12 with any subject combination as per scheme of studies –admission to 2nd yr of Diploma (Civil Engineering) - NSQF Level 5 Certificate for ‘Draughtsman – Civil’ or similar courses.
After Class 12, you can take lateral (direct) admission to the 2nd year of Diploma (Civil Engineering) in any Polytechnic college or a similar institute. This course is for Class 10 pass outs so after Class 11-12 you can get a lateral entry. Diploma (Civil Engineering) is a 3-year course. Then you can obtain a National Skill Qualification Framework (NSQF) Level 5 Training and Certificate for ‘Draughtsman – Civil’ or similar courses. The total number of training hours is 4160.

After Class 10:
You can do any of the following:
1. Go for a Diploma in Civil Engineering.
2. Take vocational training at an ITI (or similar institute) in the trade of Draughtsman – Civil.

4. Enroll for higher / senior secondary school (Class 11-12).

Future Prospects
The future for this career pathway looks satisfactory. By 2025, India will grow to be the 3rd largest construction market in the world. The construction sector in India employs more than 35 million people currently and is expected to expand with a rate of more than 5% from 2016 to 2020. There was less than 3% in 2011-2015.
The Indian government will be implementing social housing and urban development reforms through Public-Private Partnerships (PPPs) within the next 10 years, for which there will be a huge demand for trained draughtsmen.
