As a Computer Operator and Programming Assistant, you will be involved in operating computers using various software such as Microsoft Word, Microsoft Excel, Microsoft PowerPoint, etc. You will be performing different tasks using the software such as data entry, writing a letter, emailing, making cost estimates for a project, etc.
You may also work to develop various software for in-house use at the organization where you work. You may assist Software Engineers and Programmers in developing computer software.
Key roles and responsibilities
1. To install and set up an operating system and related software in computers.
2. To create, format and edit document using word processing application software.
3. To create and manage database files using MS Access.
4. To create and customize slides for presentation.
5. To maintain accounts using accounting software.
6. To develop web pages using JavaScript.
7. To enter commands via computer terminal and activate controls on computer and peripheral equipment to complete various programming tasks.
8. To monitor the system for equipment failure or errors in performance.
9. To notify Supervisor/Computer Maintenance Technicians about equipment malfunctions.
10. To respond to program error messages by identifying and resolving errors or by terminating the program.
11. To record information such as computer operating time, errors that occurred, and actions taken.
12. To operate spreadsheet programs and other types of software to load and manipulate data and to produce reports.
13. To guide and train Peripheral Equipment Operators and Computer Operator Trainees.
14. To assist Programmers and Systems Analysts in testing and debugging new programs.
Career Entry Pathway
Class 10 all subjects as per scheme of studies - ITI Certificate in Computer Operator & Programming Assistant/Similar training from other training institutes.
After completing your secondary level school studies (class 10), you can choose to do an ITI Certificate course in Computer Operator & Programming Assistant or you can also opt for any other similar course offered by training institutes across the country.
Class 10 all subjects as per scheme of studies - Computer Operator and Programming Assistant Training program under the Craftsmen Training Scheme of the Government of India.
After completing your secondary level school studies (class 10), you can choose to do the Computer Operator and Programming Assistant Training program under the Craftsmen Training Scheme of the Government of India. The duration of the course is 1 year (two semesters).
Class 10 all subjects as per scheme of studies - Computer Operator and Programming Assistant Training program under the Apprenticeship Training Scheme of the Government of India.
After completing your secondary level school studies (class 10), you can choose to do Computer Operator and Programming Assistant Training program under the Apprenticeship Training Scheme of the Government of India. Generally, the duration of the course is 15 months including basic training and practical training sessions.

After School
You can complete your secondary level school studies with any subject combination of your choice. After this, you can either complete your higher secondary level studies or you can directly enroll in an ITI certification course in Computer Operator & Programming Assistant. On successful completion, you can get a job as a Computer Operator & Programming Assistant.
