Future Prospects
The prospects for this pathway seem to be greatly improving. Especially now when India is expected to soon grow and become a global hub of footwear manufacturing to cater to the growing demand for consumer and fashion footwear. The labor cost structure in India’s footwear industry is the lowest in the world, even lower than Vietnam and Indonesia and this makes it a highly competitive market at the global stage. This is primarily due to the cottage-based model (decentralized) consisting of small enterprises outside the organized sector hence Indian exports are overall competitive. The Indian Footwear, Leather & Accessories Development Programme implemented by the Indian Government and the sanction of a special package grant of INR 26 billion is further boosting the growth in this sector. This package is expected to generate around 300,000 more jobs. India has started to export to new emerging markets like African countries.
