Description
In a progressive step toward women’s empowerment and sustainable transport, the Maharashtra government has introduced the Pink E-Rickshaw initiative. Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar announced the official rollout, which will see these electric vehicles operating as last-mile connectivity options near metro stations, airports, and tourist spots. The initiative follows a successful pilot program in Pune and is now set to be expanded to other urban centers across the state.
Scheme Highlights
Under this scheme, 10,000 pink electric rickshaws will be distributed across eight districts. The program is specifically designed to empower women between the ages of 20 and 50, with a special focus on widows, divorcees, and women from economically disadvantaged backgrounds.
Financial Aid And Subsidies
To make the vehicles more accessible, the scheme includes significant financial support. The central government offers a subsidy of Rupees 25,000 per vehicle, complemented by Rupees 75,000 from the state government. Women selected under the scheme will contribute just 10% of the vehicle cost as a down payment, while the remaining amount is covered through low-interest bank loans.
Training And Technical Support
Kinetic Green, a key implementation partner, is providing free training sessions to help women drivers obtain their licenses. The company is also responsible for developing the necessary infrastructure, including the installation of 1,500 charging stations across targeted districts. Additionally, each e-rickshaw will come with a five-year warranty and an Annual Maintenance Contract (AMC) to ensure hassle-free operation.
Infrastructure And Expansion
To facilitate seamless integration into the urban transport network, over 1,000 charging stations are planned for Pune alone. Discussions are also underway with major ride-hailing platforms such as Ola and Uber to incorporate the pink e-rickshaws into their services, further boosting employment and mobility for women drivers.

Vehicle Features And Safety
Each pink e-rickshaw is equipped with GPS for navigation and safety monitoring. Designed to carry up to four passengers, the vehicle offers a range of 120 km per charge. It also includes user-friendly features like dual suspension and high ground clearance for a smoother ride, ensuring both driver and passenger comfort.
