Description

India has achieved a significant milestone in preserving its cultural and intellectual legacy with the recent inclusion of the Bhagavad Gita manuscripts and Bharat Muni's Natyashastra in UNESCO’s prestigious Memory of the World Register. This recognition highlights India's rich heritage and underscores the importance of its historical texts. With this addition, India now has 14 documentary heritage entries in the register.

Key Highlights

Memory Of World Register - Launched in 1992, UNESCO’s Memory of the World (MoW) Programme is dedicated to preserving documentary heritage that holds global significance. It includes a wide range of materials such as manuscripts, archives, oral traditions, audiovisual recordings, and library collections, ensuring their availability for future generations.

India’s Inclusion In 2025 - On April 17, 2025, the Bhagavad Gita manuscripts and Bharat Muni's Natyashastra were added to the prestigious list, raising India’s total entries to 14.

The Bhagavad Gita’s Significance - A fundamental spiritual text of Hinduism, the Bhagavad Gita is part of the Mahabharata, specifically the Bhishma Parva. It is considered a universal guide to philosophy, dharma (duty), and spirituality. Translated into nearly 80 languages, the Gita has influenced millions around the world.

The Natyashastra’s Significance - Attributed to Bharat Muni, the Natyashastra is an ancient treatise on dramaturgy, theatre, and performing arts. It covers vital aspects such as acting, stage design, music, dance, and the aesthetic principles of rasa theory. It remains a foundational text for classical Indian dance and drama.

Official Reactions

Prime Minister Narendra Modi described the inclusion as a “proud moment for every Indian,” emphasizing the Gita and Natyashastra’s role in nurturing the civilization's consciousness and values.

Culture Minister Gajendra Singh Shekhawat called the recognition a “historic moment” for India’s cultural heritage.

Global Context

In 2025, UNESCO added 74 new collections to the Memory of the World Register, bringing the global total to 570 entries. Among the new additions, 14 entries focus on scientific documentary heritage, including contributions from women and multilateral organizations.

UNESCO’s Statement

UNESCO Director-General Audrey Azoulay noted that while documentary heritage is fragile, it plays a crucial role in preserving human memory. The Memory of the World Register aids in the preservation, knowledge-sharing, and archiving of valuable global heritage.

UNESCO’s Broader Programme

UNESCO actively supports the creation of regional and national Memory of the World registers. More than 100 countries have established their own Memory of the World committees, helping to promote universal access to significant heritage documents worldwide.

This inclusion marks a significant moment in India’s cultural preservation efforts, and the global recognition of these works ensures that the wisdom they carry will be preserved for future generations.
