Description
The Union Minister of Road Transport and Highways recently hailed the breakthrough in the Silkyara Bend–Barkot Tunnel project as a landmark achievement. Once completed, this strategic infrastructure is expected to significantly improve connectivity in Uttarakhand and reduce travel time by approximately one hour, especially benefitting pilgrims and tourists traveling to the Char Dham destinations.
Project Overview And Features
Length & Design - The tunnel spans approximately 4.53 km and is designed as a two-lane, bi-directional tunnel. It also includes an integrated escape passage for safety in emergencies.
Route & Location - Situated on the Dharasu–Yamunotri section of National Highway-134 (formerly NH-94), the tunnel connects Barkot and Silkyara two critical points along the Char Dham pilgrimage route.
Construction Mode - It is being built under the Engineering, Procurement, and Construction (EPC) model, which ensures timely delivery with minimal cost overruns.
Geological Challenges - Around 90% of the tunnel passes through phyllite rock, known for its weak and fractured nature. This has required meticulous planning and advanced tunneling techniques.
Tunneling Technique - The New Austrian Tunnelling Method (NATM) is being used. This modern construction technique adapts the tunnel support system dynamically based on real-time geological data, ensuring safety and structural integrity.
Strategic Importance
Char Dham Connectivity - As part of the Char Dham Highway Development Project, the tunnel will enhance year-round accessibility to Yamunotri, which lies just 50 km from the site. This is especially valuable during the monsoon and winter seasons when roads are often closed.
Time and Fuel Efficiency - By reducing the travel time between Barkot and Yamunotri by about an hour, the tunnel will help save fuel, reduce emissions, and ensure smoother travel.
National Highway Scheme - The project is funded under the National Highway (Original) Scheme of the Ministry of Road Transport & Highways, underscoring its national significance.
Impact On Pilgrimage And Tourism
