Description
GE Aerospace has officially started supplying the F404-IN20 jet engines to Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) for the Tejas LCA Mk1A aircraft, following some delays.
The first engine was dispatched from GE's manufacturing unit on March 26, 2025, and is scheduled to arrive in India by April.
HAL has set a target to deliver 12 units of the Tejas Mk1A fighter jets within 2025, and plans are underway to scale up production to 24 aircraft per year.
Currently, the Indian Air Force (IAF) operates with only 31 fighter squadrons, which is significantly below the sanctioned requirement of 42.5 squadrons, making these engine deliveries highly critical.
Tejas LCA Mk1A – Overview
Tejas LCA Mk1A is the enhanced version of India’s indigenous Light Combat Aircraft (LCA) Tejas, developed by HAL.
This variant brings over 40 improvements compared to the older Mk1 model, aimed at strengthening combat effectiveness, survivability, and operational capabilities.
Major Upgrades in Tejas Mk1A
Advanced Radar Systems - Features state-of-the-art Active Electronically Scanned Array (AESA) radars, including:
Israeli EL/M-2052 AESA Radar.
Indigenous Uttam AESA Radar.
Improved Electronic Warfare (EW) Suite - Equipped with a Unified Electronic Warfare Suite (UEWS) and an advanced Self-Protection Jammer Pod, improving the aircraft's defense against threats.
Upgraded Flight Control - The Mk1A comes with a Digital Fly-by-Wire System, powered by the DFCC Mk1A (Upgraded Flight Control Computer), ensuring superior maneuverability and flight stability.
Weapons Capability - The aircraft is designed with nine hardpoints that can carry:
Beyond Visual Range (BVR) missiles.
Air-to-Air and Air-to-Ground munitions.
Advanced Short-Range Air-to-Air Missiles (ASRAAM).
Operational Efficiency - Structural weight reductions and simplified maintenance procedures contribute to faster mission turnaround times and improved reliability.
About F404-IN20 Jet Engine
The F404-IN20, developed by GE Aerospace, is the powerplant for the Tejas LCA Mk1A.
This engine is a high-thrust derivative of the F404 engine family and was selected in 2004 specifically for the Tejas program.
It features
High-flow fans.
Single-crystal turbine blades.
Custom modifications tailored to meet IAF requirements.
This engine enabled Tejas to achieve a speed of Mach 1.1 during its maiden supersonic flight back in 2008.
