India marked a significant milestone in its naval modernization efforts with the launch of the stealth frigate ‘Tavasya’ on March 22, 2025. The ceremony, held at Goa Shipyard Limited, was officiated by Raksha Rajya Mantri Shri Sanjay Seth, highlighting India's commitment to achieving self-reliance in defence manufacturing.
Part Of Project 1135.6 Series
‘Tavasya’ is the second vessel under Project 1135.6, also known as the Talwar-class frigates. This project is a result of India’s collaboration with Russia, drawing inspiration from the Krivak III-class design. Initially, these warships were built in Russia, but India has since taken over their construction, demonstrating the nation's growing expertise in indigenous shipbuilding.
Technical Specifications
Length: 124.8 meters
Beam: 15.2 meters
Draught: 4.5 meters
Displacement: Approximately 3,600 tons
Maximum Speed: 28 knots
Propulsion System: Combined gas turbine for efficient cruising and high-speed maneuverability
Stealth And Combat Features
‘Tavasya’ is designed with radar-absorbing materials, reducing its visibility to enemy radar systems. The frigate is armed with cutting-edge weaponry, including:
BrahMos supersonic cruise missiles for precision strikes
Shtil-1 surface-to-air missiles for aerial defence
100 mm A-190 naval gun for offensive firepower
Torpedo tubes and anti-submarine rocket launchers to counter underwater threats
Boosting Indigenous Defence Capabilities
The successful construction of ‘Tavasya’ highlights India’s strides in self-sufficiency in defence technology. The integration of locally developed systems, such as the BrahMos missile and sonar suites, reflects the nation's ability to produce advanced warships. This aligns with the Atmanirbhar Bharat (Self-Reliant India) initiative, aimed at strengthening domestic manufacturing in critical sectors.
Strengthening India Naval Fleet
Following the launch of ‘Triput’ in July 2024, ‘Tavasya’ further enhances the Indian Navy’s operational strength. These frigates are built for multi-role operations, allowing for enhanced surveillance, maritime security, and strategic defence in key maritime regions. Their deployment marks a new era in India's naval prowess, reinforcing the country's ability to safeguard its maritime interests.
