Ahead of the Home Minister's three-day visit to Assam, the Koch-Rajbongshi community has reiterated their demand for the recognition of Scheduled Tribe (ST) status.
About Koch-Rajbongshis
The Koch Rajbongshi tribe has a rich historical background, originating from the ancient Koch kingdom. They are sometimes referred to as Koch Rajbongshi, Rajbanshi, or Rajvanshi, with "Rajbongshi" meaning "royal community" in their language.
Historically considered the indigenous people of South Asia, the Koch Rajbongshis are primarily located in lower Nepal, Northern Bengal, North Bihar, parts of Meghalaya, Northern Bangladesh, and Bhutan. These regions were once part of the Kamata kingdom, ruled by the Koch dynasty for centuries.
The community is categorized in different ways depending on the region. In Assam, they are classified as Other Backward Classes (OBC), while in Bengal, they are designated as Scheduled Castes (SC), and in Meghalaya, they are recognized as Scheduled Tribes (ST).
Language
The Rajbongshi language, spoken by around 10 million people (according to the 2001 census), has a well-established grammar and is an integral part of the community’s identity.
Religion And Beliefs
The Koch Rajbongshi people predominantly follow Hinduism, with many unique deities and rituals specific to their culture. Over time, a large portion of the community converted to Islam, and the descendants of these individuals can be found in North Bengal, Assam, and Northern Bangladesh. Additionally, there are some Christian and Buddhist Koch Rajbongshi members.
Livelihood
Agriculture and farming form the backbone of the Koch Rajbongshi’s livelihood. Historically animist in belief, they have maintained a close relationship with nature, and their cultural practices continue to reflect this deep connection.
