Description

India’s latest and most advanced air-to-air missile, now officially named Gandiva, was formerly known as the Astra MK-III. The new name pays homage to the mythical bow of Arjuna from the Mahabharata, symbolizing its strength and precision.

About Astra MK-III (Gandiva) Missile

The Gandiva is a beyond-visual-range (BVR) air-to-air missile designed for deployment on fighter aircraft. Currently under development by the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO), this missile is set to significantly enhance India’s capabilities in aerial warfare, particularly in BVR combat.

The missile is planned to be integrated with the Sukhoi Su-30MKI jets and the Light Combat Aircraft Tejas. Upon its full induction, Gandiva will be one of the longest-range air-to-air missiles in the world, increasing India’s tactical advantage in combat situations.

The missile is engineered to target a wide array of aerial threats, including enemy fighter jets, bombers, military transport aircraft, air-to-air refueling planes, and AWACS (Airborne Warning and Control System) aircraft.

Key Features

  • Range - The missile has an impressive range of 340 kilometers when the target is at an altitude of 20 kilometers, and 190 kilometers when the target is at a lower altitude of 8 kilometers.

  • Engine - It is powered by a dual-fuel ducted ramjet engine, which enables it to be launched from an aircraft at sea level or at altitudes up to 20 kilometers.

  • Speed - The missile can be launched at speeds ranging from 0.8 to 2.2 Mach, and it can strike targets at speeds between 2.0 to 3.6 Mach.

  • Maneuverability - One of its most advanced features is its ability to target highly maneuverable fighter jets, with a 20-degree angle of attack, enhancing its accuracy in dynamic combat scenarios.

  • Altitude Capability - The Gandiva missile features a ±10 km snap-up/snap-down capability, enabling it to engage targets that are either higher or lower in altitude relative to the firing aircraft.

With the induction of Gandiva, India will be better equipped to counter a variety of airborne threats, cementing its position as a major player in modern aerial defense. The missile’s long range, speed, maneuverability, and precision are set to revolutionize BVR air combat.
