Description
Russia has recently placed autonomous RS-24 Yars intercontinental ballistic missile (ICBM) launchers on combat patrol routes, equipped with nuclear warheads.
About RS-24 Yars
The RS-24 Yars, also known by the NATO designation SS-29, is a Russian-made ICBM system. It is believed to have been officially introduced into service in February 2010.
Similar in design to Russia's SS-27 (Topol M) ICBM and the Bulava (SS-NX-32) submarine-launched ballistic missile (SLBM), the RS-24 Yars has several advanced features.
Key Features
It is a three-stage, solid-fuel missile capable of being launched from both silo-based and mobile launchers.
The missile measures approximately 22.5 meters in length and 2 meters in diameter.
The total launch weight of the RS-24 is estimated at 49,000 kilograms.
Its operational range spans from a minimum of 2,000 kilometers to a maximum of 10,500 kilometers.
The RS-24 Yars uses an upgraded guidance system, combining inertial navigation with the Russian GLONASS satellite system.
The missile can carry up to 10 Multiple Independently Targetable Reentry Vehicles (MIRVs), each equipped with a thermonuclear warhead of approximately 300 kilotons.
Yars is designed to maneuver during flight and deploy both active and passive decoys, which enhance its capability to counter modern missile defense systems.
