In September 2024, scientists revealed the discovery of a new species of water flea, named Bryospilus (Indobryospilus) bharaticus n. sp., at Korigad Fort near Pune. This species is significant as it marks the first of its kind found in Tropical Asia. Bryospilus bharaticus is part of the crustacean family. Water fleas are small aquatic creatures that typically live in rivers, ponds, and pools. Habitat And Distribution
The new species was discovered in semi-terrestrial areas—habitats that are not entirely aquatic but still retain moisture. Bryospilus bharaticus shares its relatives with similar habitats across regions like West Africa, South and Central America, and New Zealand. This discovery underscores the Western Ghats’ importance as a biodiversity hotspot.
Physical Characteristics
Bryospilus bharaticus possesses several distinctive features. Its antennae are specially adapted to help it move through thick, debris-filled water films. Additionally, the species lacks a main eye, an adaptation to its dimly lit environment, allowing it to forage efficiently without relying on color perception.
Evolutionary Significance
It is believed that the ancestors of Bryospilus bharaticus resided on the Indian subcontinent prior to the breakup of the ancient supercontinent Gondwanaland, about 200 million years ago. This evolutionary connection suggests that the region may harbor other species with ancient lineages.
