The Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) is gearing up for a significant achievement with its upcoming 100th mission. On January 29, 2025, the GSLV-F15 rocket will launch the NVS-02 satellite from the Satish Dhawan Space Centre, marking a major milestone. This mission will strengthen India’s regional navigation satellite system, NavIC (Navigation with Indian Constellation).

Overview Of NavIC

NavIC is India’s dedicated regional navigation system, offering Position, Velocity, and Timing (PVT) services. Its coverage extends 1,500 km beyond India, ensuring accurate location and time data. The system features two types of services: the Standard Positioning Service (SPS) and the Restricted Service (RS). NavIC is designed to provide position accuracy of less than 20 meters and timing accuracy of better than 50 nanoseconds. SPS signals are compatible with global navigation systems such as GPS, Glonass, Galileo, and BeiDou.

Importance Of GSLV-F15 Mission

The GSLV-F15 rocket will play a critical role in deploying the NVS-02 satellite, which is part of the second generation of satellites for NavIC. This new satellite will replace older IRNSS satellites and enhance India’s regional navigation system. The GSLV-F15 mission will last approximately 19 minutes, culminating in the deployment of the NVS-02.

Features Of NVS-02 Satellite

The NVS-02 satellite, weighing 2,250 kg, is equipped with highly accurate atomic clocks to ensure precise time synchronization. It will be positioned at 111.75ºE, taking over the role of the IRNSS-1E satellite. The satellite operates on the I-2K bus platform and is designed to carry out navigation functions using multiple frequency bands.

Advancements In Navigation Technology

The NVS satellites mark a significant advancement in navigation technology by incorporating L1 band signals, which are also used by the US GPS system. This compatibility will improve the performance of NavIC, particularly in smaller devices such as fitness trackers.

Overcoming Initial Challenges

The earlier generation of IRNSS satellites encountered several issues, such as problems with their atomic clocks, which led to their early replacement. The NVS satellites, however, are designed to last for 12 years, addressing these challenges with improved reliability and performance.

Recent Progress In Navigation Services

While NavIC services faced criticism for their underutilization in the past, recent developments have expanded its application. Mobile devices capable of receiving NavIC signals are now available, enhancing the practical use of the system.
