The Indian Institute of Technology Kanpur (IITK) and the Kuppam Area Development Authority (KADA) from Andhra Pradesh have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to create India’s first Net Zero constituency. The agreement was signed by Prof. Pratik Sen, Dean of Students' Affairs at IIT Kanpur, and Vikas Marmat, Project Director at KADA. The initiative will be led by IIT Kanpur’s Kotak School of Sustainability, with Dr. Rajeev Jindal and Dr. Manoj K. Tiwari serving as the Principal Investigators for the project, according to the institute.
As part of this collaboration, IIT Kanpur will act as the technology and knowledge partner for KADA. The project will integrate advanced technical solutions, such as the adoption of renewable energy, energy-efficient systems, and sustainable waste management practices, alongside community-driven initiatives to promote a culture of sustainability. Improving water management to achieve Net Zero water will also be a key component of the initiative, as highlighted in the press release.
“This partnership between IIT Kanpur and KADA marks a significant step in redefining sustainability in India. By combining IIT Kanpur’s technological expertise with KADA’s local vision, we aim to implement cutting-edge solutions in renewable energy, waste management, and water conservation. This collaboration demonstrates how shared knowledge and a unified goal can create scalable, impactful solutions, setting a new standard for sustainable development in the country,” said Prof. Sachchida Nand Tripathi, Dean of the Kotak School of Sustainability at IIT Kanpur.
Through this MoU, IIT Kanpur and KADA are embarking on a groundbreaking initiative to tackle some of India’s most urgent environmental challenges.
