The Indian Institute of Technology-Madras (IIT-M) has recently launched Asia’s largest shallow wave basin research facility. Located at the Discovery satellite campus in Thaiyur, about 36 km from the main IIT-M campus, the facility aims to address the growing research and industry needs of India, particularly in areas like coastal engineering and port management.
Facility Overview
The newly inaugurated shallow wave basin is a state-of-the-art, multidirectional system designed to simulate complex wave and current interactions. This facility is expected to play a crucial role in tackling the challenges faced by India’s ports and waterways. It was established by the National Technology Centre for Ports Waterways and Coasts (NTCPWC), an initiative by the Ministry of Shipping, Government of India.
Indigenous Development
A key highlight of the shallow wave basin is its indigenous development. The majority of the components, including the wavemaker, were fabricated in-house at IIT-Madras. Professor K. Murali from the Ocean Engineering department emphasized that this facility removes the need for foreign technology to generate laboratory waves, showcasing IIT-Madras’ expertise in engineering and research.
