The Delhi High Court dismissed a petition on Tuesday that challenged the results of the Common Admission Test (CAT) 2024, conducted for admission to Indian Institutes of Management (IIMs) and other business schools. The court stated that there was no valid reason to interfere with the results.
Justice Tara Vitasta Ganju, while delivering the verdict, said, “In view of the above, we find no reason to interfere with the results of CAT. The petition is accordingly dismissed,” The petition was filed by Aditya Kumar Mallick, a candidate who had appeared for the exam. Mallick claimed that there was an unaccounted error in the answer key that had adversely impacted his result. He had raised objections to the provisional answer key released on December 3, but according to him, the final answer key was released without any corrections, and the results were declared prematurely on December 19, 2024, instead of the expected timeline of the second week of January 2025. Mallick's petition further argued that the rush to announce the results in December raised questions about the process.
The petitioner also pointed out that his objections were backed by respected experts and faculty members from various CAT coaching centers.
In defense, senior advocate Arvind Nayyar, representing IIM Calcutta, which had conducted the exam, argued that all objections raised by candidates had already been reviewed by an expert committee. During the proceedings on January 3, Justice Ganju noted that judicial interference in matters related to competitive exams is generally rare and typically occurs only in cases involving significant errors. The court emphasized that it could not intervene unless there were specific and compelling circumstances to warrant such action.
