Starting in 2025, the CUET-UG exam will revert to a computer-based format, and students will have the flexibility to choose any subject, regardless of what they studied in Class 12, according to UGC Chairman Jagadesh Kumar. In an interview with PTI, Kumar revealed that an expert panel formed by the University Grants Commission (UGC) had reviewed the exam and suggested several changes. The panel assessed various aspects of the test, including its structure, number of papers, duration, syllabus alignment, and operational logistics. The UGC recently approved these recommendations.
"Candidates will also be allowed to opt for subjects in CUET-UG which they haven't studied in class 12 to allow the students to cross over the rigid disciplinary boundaries in higher education," the UGC chief said.
"We have also reduced the number of papers from 63 to 37 and admissions for the dropped subjects will be conducted on the basis of scores of the General Aptitude Test (GAT)," he added.
Kumar explained that the exam would only be held in the computer-based test (CBT) format from 2025, moving away from the hybrid mode used last year. The decision was made because the CBT format is considered more secure and reliable. In addition, the number of languages offered will be reduced from 33 to 13, with the remaining options being Assamese, Bengali, English, Gujarati, Hindi, Kannada, Malayalam, Marathi, Punjabi, Odia, Tamil, Telugu, and Urdu.
The number of domain-specific subjects has also been cut from 29 to 23. Subjects such as Entrepreneurship, Teaching Aptitude, Fashion Studies, Tourism, Legal Studies, and Engineering Graphics will no longer be part of the exam. Kumar also mentioned that students will now be allowed to appear for CUET-UG in a maximum of five subjects, compared to six in the past.
"Similarly, the exam duration which varied from 45 minutes to 60 minutes depending upon the subject, has now been standardised at 60 minutes. The concept of optional questions in the exam has also been done away with and all questions will be compulsory now," Kumar said.
"When some questions are optional, students may answer differently and the difficulty level could be different," he added.
The duration of CUET-PG has also been reduced from 105 minutes to 90 minutes.
The inaugural CUET-UG exam in 2022 faced significant challenges, including technical issues that impacted its smooth conduct. Additionally, since the exam for some subjects was held in multiple shifts, the results had to be normalised to account for discrepancies in scoring.
In 2024, the exam was held for the first time in a hybrid format. However, it was cancelled across Delhi just a day before the scheduled date, citing logistical concerns.
UGC Chairman Jagadesh Kumar noted that the commission continuously strives to improve the CUET-UG every year based on past experiences, with the aim of making the exam more student-friendly.
Kumar further mentioned that the recently approved changes will be made public for feedback from stakeholders, after which a final notification will be issued, incorporating the suggestions received.
