Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) has established a committee to assess the possibility of conducting an in-house entrance exam for PhD admissions in three specific fields: Korean Language, Arts and Aesthetics, and Labour Studies. University officials announced this decision on Tuesday, stating that this would likely be a one-time arrangement, as these subjects are not part of the University Grants Commission's (UGC) National Eligibility Test (NET), leading the university to explore alternative options.
The PhD admissions for these three programmes are currently uncertain as the ongoing admission cycle is set to end on December 4, leaving prospective candidates in a state of uncertainty.
The committee, which is led by Shoba Sivasankaran, the Dean of the School of Language, convened its first meeting on Monday. The group is expected to meet again shortly to find a solution to the issue.
In the past, JNU conducted its own entrance exam, the Jawaharlal Nehru University Entrance Examination (JNUEE), for various programmes. However, with the introduction of the Common University Entrance Test (CUET) for undergraduate (UG) and postgraduate (PG) admissions, and in alignment with the National Education Policy, JNU shifted to admitting PhD students through the UGC's NET.
This year, the PhD admission process has been delayed due to issues with centrally managed exams such as the UGC-NET JRF and CUET. As a result, the university is now considering the possibility of conducting its own entrance exam for the affected PhD programmes. However, officials note that this approach would present substantial logistical and financial challenges for the institution.
Alternatively, JNU could request that the UGC add these subjects to the list covered by the NET. However, this process could take several months, further delaying the admission timeline. Another potential solution is to admit students through the Junior Research Fellowship (JRF) programme, though this would limit eligibility to candidates who have qualified for the JRF, excluding other NET or non-NET candidates.
With limited time and resources, university officials are concerned that conducting an in-house exam could strain finances, and seeking UGC's inclusion of these subjects in the NET list would likely extend the delay.
The uncertainty surrounding the admission process has raised concerns that the current admission cycle may extend beyond its scheduled end on December 4. The committee is expected to soon decide whether to proceed with an in-house entrance exam or to request the UGC's intervention, although both options could result in further delays.
As the situation unfolds, prospective students continue to await clarity on their admission status.
