About Iron Beam
The Iron Beam, also known as Magen or Light Shield, is a novel laser-based missile defense system developed by Israel.
It is a 100kW class High Energy Laser Weapon System (HELWS) that is believed to be the first operational system of its kind.
It is a directed-energy air defense system that fires powerful light beams capable of destroying fast-moving projectiles.
Built by Rafael Advanced Defense Systems, Iron Beam was originally unveiled in 2014.
Its operational range is up to 7 kilometers (4.3 miles).
Advantages
The laser's continuous energy source prevents ammo depletion, assuring long-term defense capabilities.
The elimination of conventional ammunition will lead to huge cost reductions.
It complements Israel's Irom Dome and may be combined with a variety of platforms to form part of any multilayered defense system.
Disadvantages
Reduced effectiveness in low-visibility situations, such as high cloud cover or inclement weather.
It cannot function efficiently in damp conditions because the more moisture in the air, the more water particles absorb the laser's energy.
Iron Beam requires a straight line of sight between the system and its target, making location extremely important.
It also has a far slower rate of fire, taking around five seconds to transmit enough energy to annihilate its target.
