Kaziranga National Park, known for its iconic one-horned rhinoceros, is now recognised as India's second-largest butterfly diversity hotspot. Following Namdapha National Park in Arunachal Pradesh, Kaziranga has an astounding 446 butterfly species. This new categorization emphasizes the park's abundant biodiversity.
Research Findings
Over 446 butterfly species have been identified in Kaziranga National Park.
This discovery elevates Kaziranga to the second most diverse butterfly habitat in India, trailing only Namdapha National Park.
The discoveries are the result of years of research by Dr. Monsoon Jyoti Gogoi, a young scientist who has been studying the park since 2007.
Butterfly Conservation Meet-2024
The first 'Butterfly Conservation Meet-2024' was conducted in September to focus on the in-depth study of butterfly species in Kaziranga.
The event drew over 40 butterfly aficionados, including representatives from North Eastern Hill University, Cotton University, Maharashtra Forest Department, Corbett Foundation, and the North East Butterflies club.
The Significance Of Kaziranga's Location
Kaziranga's varied butterfly population is especially noteworthy given its location outside the Himalayan and Patkai mountain ranges, where significant species diversity is usually expected.
New Species Discovery
The study discovered 18 new butterfly species in Kaziranga that had not before been documented in India. Several prominent species include:
Burmese Threering
Glassy Cerulean.
Dark-bordered hedge Blue
Andaman Yellow Banded Flat.
Ferrar’s Cerulean
Great Red-vein Lancer
Peacock Oakblue.
Single-lined Flash
Yellow-tailed Awlking
White Palm Bob, Dark-Dusted Palm Dart, and Clavate Banded Demon.
Pale-marked Ace
Yellow Onyx
Long-winged Hedge Blue
Panbari Reserve Forest
Aside from the national park, the Panbari Reserve Forest in Kaziranga is home to a diverse range of butterfly species, adding to the area's ecological richness.
New Guidebook On Butterflies
Dr. Monsoon Jyoti Gogoi has written a new visual guidebook that describes the 446 butterfly species present in Kaziranga.
Importance Of Butterfly Conservation
Gaurab Nandi Das, a Czech Republic representative, gave a presentation on butterfly taxonomy at the meeting, highlighting the importance of butterfly conservation in Kaziranga.
Kaziranga National Park
It is located in the Golaghat and Nagaon districts of Assam.
It was designated a National Park in 1974.
It is also a UNESCO World Heritage Site, home to two-thirds of the world's bigger one-horned rhinoceros.
It is the largest undisturbed section of the Brahmaputra Valley floodplain.
The vegetation consists of eastern wet alluvial grasslands, semi-evergreen woods, and tropical moist deciduous forests.
