The Assam government has introduced a new concept of "co-district" under a district administration, replacing the current system of civil sub-divisions.
About The Co-District Initiative
'Co-districts' are smaller administrative units below districts, administered by an Assistant District Commissioner.
This first-of-its-kind program in the country aims to bring governance closer to the people.
It is anticipated to alleviate the administrative issues that the district administration is currently facing.
The co-district commissioners' powers and responsibilities will be identical to those of district commissioners.
These offices are responsible for land revenue, development and welfare, excise, and disaster management.
These will have administrative authority over all departments in the co-district and magisterial powers, such as issuing event permits.
These will handle regular administrative chores including issuing ration cards, caste certificates, and granting permission to sell property.
