Description

Biologists, together with partners and the public, have been responding to reports of stranded manatees in Florida, the United States, following Hurricane Helene.

Details About Manatees

  • Manatees are aquatic mammals classified as Sirenia. This category includes dugongs.

  • Dugongs and manatees have extremely similar appearances and behaviours, but there is one major difference: their tails.

  • Manatees have paddle-shaped tails, whilst dugongs have fluked tails, giving them a whale-like look.

  • Habitat- Manatees live in shallow, swampy coastal regions and rivers.

  • Manatees are classified into three species or kinds.

  • The Amazonian manatee dwells in the Amazon River and fresh water in South America. This species exclusively lives in freshwater.

  • The African manatee inhabits tropical West Africa.

  • The Caribbean manatee lives in Florida and the West Indies.

  • Adult manatees may reach a length of 15 feet (4.6 meters) and weigh 1,660 kilogrammes.

  • All three manatee species are dull grey, blackish, or brown in hue, with strong tapering bodies that culminate in a flat rounded tail utilised for forward propulsion.

  • The forelimbs are changed into flippers, and there have no rear limbs.

  • To breathe, they must swim to the water's surface.

  • Lifespan- 50-60 years.

  • They are herbivores. They feed on the seabed and consume seagrasses, earning them the nickname "sea cow".

  • They graze for up to eight hours every day and ingest 4 to 9 percent of their body weight on watery plants.

  • Aside from mothers and their young, or males pursuing a receptive female, manatees are mainly solitary creatures.

  • Conservation Status- The IUCN's Red List of Threatened Species classifies all three manatee species as 'vulnerable'.
