Researchers at the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) in Madras developed new methods for treating eye issues such as retinal tears and diabetic retinopathy. These eye disorders impact around 11 million people in India. The study used modest laser-induced convection, which speeds up and improves the delivery of therapy to the retina.
Techniques Of Work
Professor Arunn Narasimhan and eye expert Dr. Lingam Gopal collaborated on the project for over 10 years. They studied how heat from lasers affects the retina and improves drug delivery efficiency. Using computer simulations and testing, scientists determined that mildly heating the eye could speed up the delivery of medication to the retina.
Important Findings
The researchers tested their technology on a replica of a human eye made of glass. When medicine is delivered to the retina via natural diffusion, it typically takes around 12 hours for the drug to reach the desired concentration. However, with this new heating process, the duration was decreased to only 12 minutes.
Security And Future Use
Importantly, the study found that this gentle heating method does not injure eye tissues, making it suitable for use. The researchers hope that this technology will be used to treat a variety of retinal illnesses more efficiently in the future.
Importance Of The Research
This research has been published in the Wiley Heat Transfer Journal and will be presented at the ICCHMT conference. It demonstrates that the scientific community regards this work and its promise for treating retinal disorders.
More On Retinal Disorders
Retinal disorders damage the retina, the light-sensitive area in the rear of the eye. Examples include-
Retinitis pigmentosa- Retinitis pigmentosa is a hereditary disorder that impairs peripheral vision.
Age-related macular degeneration - Age-related macular degeneration (AMD) impairs central vision, particularly in older persons.
Diabetic retinopathy - Diabetic retinopathy is a diabetes complication that causes damage to the retina's blood vessels.
Retinal detachment - Retinal detachment is a medical emergency in which the retina separates from the surrounding tissues.
Stargardt disease - Stargardt disease is an illness that causes eyesight loss in young people.
These conditions are frequently detected with an eye exam, and symptoms may include blind spots, flashes, or floating shapes in vision.
