NATO intends to establish a new ground command in Finland, near the Russian border, in 2025 to oversee land force operations in northern Europe during prospective armed conflicts. Finland, which joined NATO last year after Russia invaded Ukraine in 2022, is preparing for the alliance's deployment on its soil. Finnish Defence Minister Antti Hakkanen announced the plan to establish the command at Finland's Army Headquarters in Mikkeli. The center, known as the Multi Corps Land Component Command, will report to NATO's Norfolk Joint Force Command in the United States and Finland's land force command.
Budget & Personnel
Initially, the unit will have an annual budget of €8.5 million ($9.5 million) and a few dozen international personnel.
Collaboration With Sweden And Drilling
Finland and Sweden, who both joined NATO this year, agreed that Sweden would organize visits by foreign NATO soldiers and international drills in northern Finland. However, because to its own military might, Finland does not want to host a permanent multinational force similar to those in the Baltic nations.
The Operational Scope
The new unit's geographic extent will be determined later, but it will manage ground force operations planning in the Nordic region.
