Description

As of September 2024, India has 43 UNESCO World Heritage Sites, including the recently added "Moidams - the Mound-Burial System of the Ahom Dynasty from Assam."The Sacred Ensembles of the Hoysala, which include the well-known Hoysala temples of Belur, Halebid, and Somananthpura in Karnataka, have been designated as UNESCO World Heritage Sites. This makes it India's 42nd UNESCO World Heritage Site, following Rabindranath Tagore's Santiniketan's recognition the day before. The decision to add Santiniketan to the prestigious list was taken during the 45th session of the World Heritage Committee, held in Saudi Arabia, reaffirming its importance on the global stage.

43 UNESCO World Heritage Sites In India

The UNESCO World Heritage Convention, founded in 1972, acknowledges and protects significant cultural and natural sites around the world. India recently added two new sites to the UNESCO World Heritage list, bringing the total number of Indian sites to 42. India is now the sixth country in the world with the most UNESCO World Heritage Sites. Of the 43 Indian sites, 35 are cultural, 7 are natural, and 1 is a mix.

In other words, UNESCO has designated 43 sites in India as having outstanding universal value and should be protected for future generations. These locations include ancient temples, forts, palaces, caves, national parks, and wildlife sanctuaries. These places showcase India's rich cultural and natural legacy, making them must-see destinations for any visitor to the country.
