Description
The Union Ministry of Commerce and Industry recently authorized the Spices Board's 'Sustainability in the Spice Sector through Progressive, Innovative, and Collaborative Interventions for Export Development' (SPICED) initiative.
About The SPICED Scheme
It aims to considerably increase the export of spices and value-added spice goods, as well as improve cardamom productivity and post-harvest quality of spices in India for export.
It will be implemented for the remainder of the 15th Finance Commission's tenure, which runs through 2025-26.
Key Highlights Of The Scheme
It is expected to facilitate value addition while also driving innovation and sustainability in the spice sector by introducing new sub-components/programs such as Mission Value Addition, Mission Clean and Safe Spices, GI spice promotion, entrepreneurship support through Spice Incubation Centres, and so on.
The initiative focuses on farmers groups / FPOS / Farmers Clusters designated by ODOP and DEH, the SC/ST community, exporters from the Northeast region, and SMEs.
While exporters having a valid Certificate of Registration as Exporter of Spices (CRES) are eligible for assistance under these programs, priority will be given to first-time applicants, Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs), and so on.
The programs in the components Improving cardamom productivity and Post-harvest quality upgradation of spices are specifically designed to empower farmer groups, including Farmer Producer Organizations (FPOs), Farmer Producer Companies (FPCs), and Self-Help Groups (SHGs) in key spice-growing regions.
These groups will be prioritized for post-harvest spice improvement, with focused assistance provided to increase the generation of an exportable spice excess while adhering to applicable food safety and quality standards.
Scheme operations will be geotagged, and fund availability, the status of applications under various components, a list of recipients, and other information will be published on the Board's website to improve transparency.
