Description

According to the most recent updates, the Delhi High Court has instructed the DU Vice Chancellor and other relevant respondents to address representations requesting the implementation of 50% women's reservation in DU Students Union Elections. The petition stressed the importance of gender equality in student governance.

The Delhi High Court bench, chaired by Justice Manmohan and Justice Tushar Rao Gedela, further directed the authorities to decide the plea in accordance with the law within three weeks. The petition requested that the Central Government, UGC, and Delhi University reserve 50% of seats for female students in DU student union elections and college student union elections.

The petition further requests that, considering the recent passage of 33% reservation for women in state assembly and parliamentary elections under the Nari Shakti Vandan Abhiyaan, DU ensure equal representation and participation of female students in the election.

A notification on the DUSU elections was just issued, and the nomination process will begin on September 17, 2024, with elections scheduled for September 27, 2024.

According to reports, the petitioner underlined the need for gender equality in student elections and asked the university to follow the Lyngdoh Committee recommendations. Following the Supreme Court's order, the Union Ministry of Human Resource Development formed a committee headed by J M Lyngdoh, a former chief election commissioner, to make recommendations on issues related to student bodies and union elections held in universities, colleges, and higher education institutions across the country.
