Description
The Maharashtra government officially recognized the geoglyphs and petroglyphs in Ratnagiri as protected monuments under the Maharashtra Ancient Monuments and Archaeological Sites and Remains Act of 1960. These ancient artworks from the Mesolithic period represent diverse creatures and footprints. Ratnagiri has about 1,500 artworks spread across 70 sites, some of which are on UNESCO's tentative World Heritage list.
Rock Art Details
Petroglyphs- These antiquities, discovered in Deud, Ratnagiri, date back between 20,000 and 10,000 years. They include depictions of a rhinoceros, deer, monkey, donkey, and footprints. The overall protected area measures 210 square meters.
Geoglyphs- Located along the 900-kilometer Konkan coast of Maharashtra and Goa, Ratnagiri alone has around 1,500 geoglyphs distributed across 70 sites. Seven of these are on UNESCO's tentative World Heritage List.
Significance
Art Form- Geoglyphs and petroglyphs are two separate ancient art forms that feature images or designs created on rock surfaces or the earth's surface. The great concentration of these artworks on laterite plateaus in Konkan is unusual and noteworthy.
UNESCO's viewpoint- According to UNESCO, these rock art collections are unique open-air ensembles of prehistoric human expression, displaying varied living forms such as marine, riverine, animals, reptiles, amphibians, and avians that disappeared from the region ages ago.
Conservation Concerns
Conservationists are concerned that a proposed oil refinery in Barsu could harm the area's geoglyphs, a major cultural heritage site.
