Description

The World Crafts Council International presented Kashmir City with the renowned Certificate of World Craft City at a lavish ceremony in Srinagar, the capital of the Union Territory of Jammu and Kashmir. Jammu & Kashmir Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha, Sa'ad Hani Al-Qaddumi, President of the World Crafts Council, and other council members attended this important event. This honor came after the World Crafts Council announced in June 2024 that Kashmir will be included to its list of World Craft Cities.

Kashmir Is Fourth Indian City To Achieve World Craft City Status

Kashmir has become the fourth Indian city to receive the World Craft City certificate from the World Crafts Council. This prestigious recognition ranks Kashmir alongside Jaipur in Rajasthan, Mamallapuram in Tamil Nadu, and Mysore in Karnataka. Jaipur and Mamallapuram acquired their titles in 2015, with Mamallapuram receiving special recognition for its stone carving craft. Mysore followed in 2018. This inclusion promotes the rich cultural legacy and craftsmanship of these Indian cities on a worldwide scale.

Celebrate Kashmir's Rich Craft Heritage

Kashmir, with a 4000-year history, is known for its magnificent crafts, which are heavily influenced by Iranian and Central Asian art and culture. The region is renowned for a wide range of crafts, including-

  • Carpet weaving- It is well-known for its elaborate designs and high quality.

  • Kani-Shawl- Known for its excellent wool and intricate designs.

  • Paper Maachie- The artistic masterpieces fashioned from paper pulp.

  • Khatamband- Unique hardwood ceiling decorations.

  • Wood Carving: Detailed and beautiful woodworking.

  • Kandikari Copperware- Beautiful copper utensils and antiquities.

  • Tilla Work- Embroidery using gold and silver thread.

UNESCO Recognition And Its Impact

In 2021, Kashmir was named a UNESCO Creative City in the Crafts and Folk Art category. This designation has already had a substantial positive impact on the region's handicraft sector. With the new status as a World Craft City, greater progress is expected.

Boosting The Handicraft Sector

The World Craft City designation is predicted to offer various advantages to Kashmir, including-

  • Increased Global Recognition- The World Craft City designation will raise the global prominence of Kashmiri handicrafts, resulting in stronger demand.

  • Enhanced Export Opportunities- According to government estimates, the export of handicrafts from Kashmir has increased from Rs. 1,000 to 2,000 crores during the last five years. This tendency is expected to continue increasing with the new recognition.

  • Tourism Boost- The marking will attract more tourists interested in traditional crafts, benefiting the region's tourism industry.

  • Artisan Income- As demand for their items rises and market access improves, artisans' incomes will rise.

  • Cultural history Preservation- The recognition will help to preserve the region's cultural history by promoting and maintaining traditional crafts.

World Craft Council International

The World Crafts Council International was founded in 1964 by Ms. Aileen Osborn Vanderbilt Webb, Ms. Margaret Merwin Patch, and Ms. Kamaladevi Chattopadhyay in New York, USA. As a non-profit organization, its mission is to preserve, promote, and enhance world craftsmanship and traditional crafts. The council plays an important role in recognizing and supporting cities and areas with strong craft traditions, ensuring that these cultural heritages are cherished and preserved for future generations.
