Description

The West Bengal Assembly has voted a resolution to discontinue the NEET examinations and hold a fresh admission exam for medical students. West Bengal is the third state, after Karnataka and Tamil Nadu, to cancel the national-level medical exam.

West Bengal's resolution condemning the exam accused the National Testing Agency of failing to organize a free and fair entrance exam for students pursuing a medical career. The Parliamentary Affairs Minister also encouraged the state administration to continue holding joint entrance exams in the state.

According to West Bengal Education Minister Bratya Basu, question papers worth Rs. 30-40 lakhs were leaked to the media, destroying the futures of 2 lakh students in the country. He went on to say that the state can administer the exam in an open and transparent manner.

He went on to say that the announcement of the NEET UG results was postponed until June 4, 2024, when the Lok Sabha election results were announced, implying that it was done to cover up something.

Earlier, West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee wrote to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, demanding him to take prompt action and cancel the NEET Exams, restoring the system of state governments holding independent tests.

Karnataka Passed A Resolution Against NEET

On July 22, the Karnataka state cabinet also approved a resolution opposing the NEET examinations. The resolution is likely to be tabled during the current assembly session. DK Shivkumar, Karnataka's Deputy Chief Minister, has urged the Centre to cancel the NEET tests and enable states to conduct their own entrance exams.

Tamil Nadu Assembly Passes Resolution To Scrap NEET

The Tamil Nadu state government has unanimously endorsed a resolution urging the central to cancel the NEET tests and allow state governments to hold their own entrance exams for medical admissions. It should be remembered that Tamil Nadu has traditionally been hostile to the NEET UG exams, preferring to run its own assessments for MBBS admissions.
