Description
Prime Minister Narendra Modi opened India's longest and largest urban tunnel project, the Thane Borivali Twin Tunnel, which was built by the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) on July 13, 2024. This Rs. 16,600 crore project will shorten the travel time between Thane and Borivali from more than an hour to only 12 minutes, reducing the distance by 12 kilometers. This endeavor is part of a larger infrastructure project of Rs. 29,000 crore targeted at improving connectivity in Mumbai.

Two working lanes, one emergency lane.

Environmental And Technical Aspects
India's largest tunnel-boring machine will be used to bore a 10.25-kilometer segment with cross passageways every 300 meters. The MMRDA claims that its construction would not impact the Sanjay Gandhi National Park and will help to minimize noise and air pollution.

Traffic Management- Reduces traffic on Ghodbundar Road and the Western Express Highway.
Enhanced Connectivity- Provides a direct and efficient route from east to west in suburban areas.

About The Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA)
MMRDA, established in 1975, is in charge of planning and overseeing development in the Mumbai Metropolitan Region. It spearheaded the building of the Bandra-Kurla complex and the Mumbai Metro, among other major infrastructure projects such as the Mumbai Urban Infrastructure Project and the Mumbai Trans-Harbour Link.
