Universities in the national capital, including JNU and DU, intend to resume weekend lectures and have a shorter winter break in response to delayed admissions caused by the uncertainty surrounding the declaration of CUET UG results.
The National Testing Agency (NTA), which administers the entrance exam, announced on July 14 a re-test for over 1,000 CUET UG students on July 19, following concerns from candidates, including time wasted due to the dissemination of the incorrect question paper.
The agency, however, has not clarified the declaration of results, which was supposed to be announced on June 30 but has already been postponed by more than two weeks. The final answer key for the undergraduate admission test has not yet been released.
A senior JNU official stated that the delay in the declaration of results will have an influence on the university's goal to establish a single academic calendar for all student batches.
The university will have to rely on extra Saturday classes and may have to abbreviate its winter vacation to make up for lost time in completing the syllabus, according to the official. Instead of five days a week, we may have to teach six days a week and use Saturdays to cover the curriculum. We will also explore shortening the winter break if necessary.
"JNU had planned to release an unified academic calendar for all the batches from this year onwards to bring symmetry in the admission process. The practice was discontinued due to the challenges faced during the COVID-19 pandemic. Things will become clear once the result dates are announced," the official said.
Vice Chancellor Anu Singh Lather further stated that Ambedkar University intends to hold additional classes in the evenings and on weekends, as well as reduce the number of holidays, to compensate for the delays.
"There would be a delay of about two weeks or so due to the re-test. I don't think that is much of a time and can easily be compensated with some extra classes".
"Originally, the session was supposed to start from August 1 for first year students and but if the results are not announced in the next two weeks, we will hold extra classes for them in the evening after regular classes on weekends and also reduce the number of holidays to cover up," Lather said.
Classes for the remaining students will begin on the planned day, she said. Officials at Delhi University said the delay will force first-year students' academic calendars to end later than expected. The remaining students' schedules will stay unchanged, with classes beginning on August 1, according to DU registrar Vikas Gupta. Earlier this week, DU announced a four-day winter vacation for second-year students. The varsity did not explain why the winter break was shorter. Meanwhile, an official from IP University stated that the delay will have no effect on the admissions process because the university takes admissions through CUET in its last leg and expected to get the results before then.
Mahesh Verma, Vice Chancellor of IP University, said,"We take admissions through national level entrance test for professional courses. We also have our own in-house entrance examination. After admissions through these mediums are completed we fill the remaining seats through CUET. By that time, the CUET scores would be out, so our admissions wouldn't be affected," he said.
There was no quick response from Jamia Millia Islamia, which accepts undergraduate applications through CUET for some of its courses.
While DU and Ambedkar University rely entirely on CUET scores to admit students to their undergraduate and postgraduate programs, universities including as JNU, Jamia, and IP University either accept the scores for specific courses or have their own entrance method.
