Description

Archaeologists on the Indonesian island of Sulawesi discovered the world's earliest known cave painting with a verifiable date. This piece of artwork was discovered on the top of Leang Karampuang Cave. It was created at least 51,200 years ago. Figures that resemble people and a wild pig are involved in what appears to be a scenario from a story. This new information changed when the first known stories presented through art were created.

Dating Technique

To determine the age of the picture, a novel science approach was applied that involved utilizing a laser to date calcium carbonate crystals that grew on top of it. According to Maxime Aubert, an expert at Griffith University, this technology is entirely unique and has the potential to revolutionize the way rock art dating is done around the world.

Details About The Artwork

The main picture in the piece of art is a pig, with three lesser characters that resemble people. They are all dark crimson. Figures are arranged in such a way that they appear to interact, implying an early kind of storytelling. Researchers believe that the artwork's precise placement of materials reveals a clear tale, yet the specific story remains unknown.

Significance Of The Find

Not only does the picture at Leang Karampuang predate the oldest cave paintings in Europe, but it also throws into doubt the notion that cave art originated in Europe. Another main researcher, Adam Brumm, adds that this revelation alters our understanding of our predecessors' cognitive abilities and the dissemination of early human art over the planet.

Implications In Human History

This finding demonstrates that the ability to create art and tell stories began much earlier than previously assumed. It may have been produced by the earliest Homo sapiens, who arrived in Australia from Southeast Asia around 65,000 years ago. The findings indicate that early humans possessed very advanced cognitive abilities, such as the ability to utilize symbols and narrate stories. This major discovery in Indonesia opens up new perspectives on how society and art have evolved throughout time. Researchers will try to learn more about the individuals who created these paintings, as well as look for more pieces of art that have yet to be discovered, which may modify our perceptions of ancient society.
