Description
In a groundbreaking step, the Ministry of Coal has launched India's first pilot project for underground coal gasification in Jharkhand. Located near the Kasta coal block in Jamtara District, Eastern Coalfields Limited's revolutionary endeavor promises to modernize the coal sector. Rather of removing coal, the process will take place underground, turning coal into useful gases such as methane, hydrogen, and carbon monoxide. These gases can subsequently be used to generate synthetic natural gas, chemical feedstocks, and other products, potentially transforming India's energy sector.
Key Project Details
The pilot project, which began on June 22, 2024, will be implemented in two phases over a two-year period. It is supported by the Coal India Limited Research and Development Board and carried out in partnership with the Central Mine Planning and Design Institute (CMPDI) Ranchi and the Canadian business Ergo Exergy Technologies Inc.
Objectives And Impact
The goal of the project is to show that underground coal gasification is economically viable at the Kasta coal block. If successful, it might position India as a pioneer in this field, paving the path for the sustainable and efficient use of the country's coal resources.
