Description

Lal, Mursan, and Hilsa. These are the names given to three craters on Mars' surface that were recently identified by the Physical Research Laboratory (PRL) in Ahmedabad and hint at the planet's wet past. Lal was named after Varanasi's famed cosmic ray physicist, the late Professor Devendra Lal. The other two are named after the towns of Mursan in Uttar Pradesh's Hathras district and Hilsa in Bihar's Nalanda district.

About Lal Crater

The largest of these craters, measuring around 65 kilometers in diameter, has been called "Lal Crater" in honor of Professor Devendra Lal. Professor Lal, who directed PRL from 1972 to 1983, made significant contributions to cosmic ray physics and space science. His leadership and pioneering work have left an indelible influence on the scientific community, particularly in terms of expanding our understanding of cosmic rays and their effects on planetary environments. In the instance of Lal Crater, SHARAD discovered significant sedimentary deposits, providing persuasive evidence that water formerly flowed across Martian soil. This revelation adds greatly to our understanding of Mars' historical climate and habitability possibilities, as well as insights into the planet's billions of years of evolutionary history.

Other Two Craters

There are two minor craters next to Lal Crater: "Mursan Crater" and "Hilsa Crater." Mursan Crater is named for the town of Mursan in Uttar Pradesh, India, whilst Hilsa Crater is named after the town of Hilsa in Bihar. Both towns have cultural and historical significance in the region, and naming these craters after them honors the diverse cultural fabric that informs our exploration and understanding of space. The finding of these craters was made possible by SHARAD (Mars SHAllow RADar sounder), a cutting-edge subsurface sounding radar installed on NASA's Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter (MRO). This technology enables scientists to probe beneath Mars' surface, giving information about its geological makeup and history.

About Tharsis Volcanic Plateau

The three craters are located in the Tharsis volcanic region on the Red Planet. Tharsis is a huge volcanic plateau located near the equator of Mars' western hemisphere. The region has the greatest volcanoes in the Solar System. According to PRL director Anil Bhardwaj, the International Astronomical Union (IAU) Working Group for Planetary System Nomenclature authorized calling the craters "Lal" crater, "Mursan" crater, and "Hilsa" crater on June 5. Mursan and Hilsa craters are approximately 10 kilometers wide and are overlaid on the eastern and western sides of the Lal crater's rim.
