Description

A 700-metre pedestrian bridge was inaugurated on June 4. The Bridge of National Unity is one of the world's longest bridges. Satoraljaujhely, a city in eastern Hungary, has a new tourist attraction.

About This Bridge

  • The cable-stayed bridge is 700 metres long and supported by six cable ropes. The Czech Dolni Morava bridge is 721 metres long.

  • The bridge cost four billion HUF [10 million euros] to build and was paid for out of the national budget.

  • The administration claims no European Union funds were used.

  • The bridge, which connects two nearby hills and features a glass floor in the center, is designed to enhance tourism in northeastern Hungary, which borders Slovakia.

  • The entrance fee is 5,000 HUF [12 euros] each individual.

Official Report

Zsolt Semjen, Deputy Prime Minister of Hungary, and Denes Danko, Deputy Mayor of Satoraljaujhely, both from the ruling Fidesz party, roll a barrel across the bridge. According to Hungarian officials, theirs is the longest in the world in terms of pillar distance.

  • The bridge was launched on Hungary's June 4 Day of National Unity, also known as the Memorial Day of the Treaty of Trianon, and has been lauded by the government as a symbol of national unity. Following the Trianon Peace Treaty, which ended World War I, Hungary lost two-thirds of its territory and half of its population to neighboring countries. Many Hungarians view the pact to be a huge injustice, and Prime Minister Viktor Orban's government frequently fosters such opinion.
