Description

Two environmentalists, Jai Dhar Gupta and Vijay Dhasmana India's first biosphere, the Rajaji Raghati Biosphere (RRB), was established in a tiger reserve within Uttarakhand's Rajaji National Park.

About This Biosphere

  • The biosphere is located in Uttarakhand's Rajaji National Park and overlooks the stony white Raghati riverbed, which is ensconced in the Shivalik foothills.

  • The biosphere is a 35-acre private forest initiative dedicated to identifying and regenerating rare and endangered native tree species while protecting the region from poaching and mining.

  • The land set aside for RRB was previously desolate and degraded.

  • "Thousands of non-native eucalyptus trees were destroyed within days of obtaining the property. The soil was then shaped to retain water, minimize erosion, and enhance groundwater recharge.

  • They are also creating a second biosphere above the Koyna River in the buffer zone of the Sahyadri Tiger Reserve near Pune, Maharashtra, in the Western Ghats.

How Was It Possible To Develop The Biosphere?

"We collected seeds, established a seed bank, and collaborated with biodiversity parks to germinate and cultivate saplings of trees such as haldu, rohini, mala, saal, jamun, pangana, etc, which were then planted across the biosphere," says Jai, who has also banned combustion-engine vehicles in the region.

About Rajaji Tiger Reserve

  • Rajaji National Park's intent notification was issued in 1983 after the merger of Uttarakhand's three wildlife sanctuaries, Rajaji, Motichur, and Chilla. It was named after the well-known liberation fighter C. Rajgopalachari, also known as "Rajaji".

  • Rajaji National Park covers an area of 820.42 square kilometers. Subsequently, in 2015, 255.63 square kilometers of neighboring reserve forest were added to the area of Rajaji National Park as buffer zone, and the entire area of 1075 square kilometers was declared Rajaji Tiger Reserve under the provisions of the Wild Life Protection Act 1972.

  • The tiger reserve produces fresh and pure air, serving as the lungs of Uttarakhand's three major cities: Dehradun, Haridwar, and Rishikesh.

Future Move

Jai and Vijay are also developing a second biosphere atop the Western Ghats. The Koyna River is located in the Sahyadri Tiger Reserve's buffer zone near Pune, Maharashtra. "It has a radically diverse ecology, geography, and vegetation.
