Description
The United Nations Educational, Scientific, and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) South Asia Regional Office, in collaboration with the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY), Government of India, hosted the National Stakeholder Workshop on Safe, Trusted, and Ethical AI at the Taj Palace Hotel in New Delhi. This event, which comes after the Government of India approved the IndiaAI Mission, is a key step in improving India's AI ecosystem, with a budget exceeding Rs 10,000 crore.
Meaning Of The Workshop
The session brought together senior officials from Central Line Ministries, State Governments, NITI Aayog, and business partners including NASSCOM. The discussions centered on AI's ethical implications, societal repercussions, and ethical AI deployment options in India.
Inaugural Session
The inaugural session was attended by prominent figures such as Professor Ajay Kumar Sood, Principal Scientific Adviser to the Government of India; Shri Abhishek Singh, Additional Secretary, MeitY; Mr Tim Curtis, Director of the UNESCO South Asia Regional Office; and Ms Gabriela Ramos, UNESCO Assistant Director General for Social and Human Sciences. Prof Sood underscored India's balanced approach to AI, while Shri Singh stressed the significance of a secure and trustworthy AI ecosystem.
Economic Impact, Mission Components
The revolutionary potential of AI, which is expected to add roughly $500 billion to India's GDP by 2025, was underlined. MeitY's leadership in the IndiaAI Mission encompasses important components such as compute capacity, innovation centers, and startup finance, all with the goal of achieving technological self-reliance.

The sessions focused on AI basics, ethical elements, UNESCO's role in AI ethics, and India's AI policy landscape. The workshop followed the UNESCO Recommendation on the Ethics of Artificial Intelligence and served as a venue for informed policy formation.
