Description

Om Birla, Speaker of the Lok Sabha, won the Kota seat with a big majority. This significant victory makes him the first speaker to be re-elected to the Lower House of Parliament in 20 years. Before Om Birla, the last Lok Sabha speaker to be re-elected was P. A. Sangma in the 11th Lok Sabha, which met from 1996 to 1998. He later won in Tura, Meghalaya, in 1998. The next speaker was G M C Balayogi, who maintained the role until his unexpected death in 2002. In 2004, Shiv Sena leader Manohar Joshi lost his position as successor. Following that, Somnath Chatterjee remained in charge till he resigned before the 2009 national elections.

Recent Speakers & Elections

Meira Kumar of the Congress party succeeded Chatterjee as speaker from 2009 till she was defeated in 2014. Sumitra Mahajan took over, but did not contest in the 2019 elections. Om Birla was chosen to speak in the Lok Sabha in 2019 and easily retained his seat in the 2024 election.

More About The Lok Sabha

The Lok Sabha, or "House of the People," is India's lower house of parliament. Each Lok Sabha term lasts five years, unless it is abolished early. The Lok Sabha can have up to 552 members, however it currently has just 545. The Lok Sabha held its inaugural session in May 1952. Aside from that, it helps in the passage of the budget and the introduction money bills. Members of the House elect the Speaker, who serves as the House's leader. Interestingly, the Lok Sabha has more constitutional power than the Rajya Sabha, particularly in terms of expenditure and finances. The Lok Sabha is the only body that can vote on whether or not to trust the government, as well as bring a motion of no-confidence against it. Also, you must be 25 years old to run for Lok Sabha.
