Indian Army Established Highest Tank Repair Facilities In Ladakh

Description

Since April to May 2020, when China sent troops near the border, the Indian Army has been more present in Eastern Ladakh than before. Over 500 tanks and infantry battle vehicles, including Quick Reaction Fighting Vehicles manufactured in India, are utilized in this region noted for its severe environment and tough terrain.

Establishment Of High-Altitude Maintenance Facilities

The Indian Army erected two of the world's tallest tank repair facilities to keep these armoured regiments operational. These sites are located in Nyoma and the DBO Sector and operate at elevations greater than 14,500 feet. Because it is difficult to maintain and repair vehicles in such extreme conditions, Medium Maintenance (Reset) Facilities are critical.

Infrastructure Enhancement For Armored Vehicles

The army has been focusing on constructing appropriate facilities to store contemporary military equipment such as T-90 and T-72 tanks, BMPs, and K-9 Vajra self-propelled howitzers. They work hard to ensure that the equipment functions even when it is extremely cold outside (-40 degrees Celsius is usual in the winter).

Continued Standoff And Response

The standoff between India and China has lasted more than four years, and each country maintains approximately 50,000 troops in the area. India's rapid and robust deployment of armed forces in reaction to Chinese actions demonstrates its will to defend its territory and maintain its standing along the Line of Actual Control.

About Line Of Actual Control (LAC)

The Line of Actual Control (LAC) between Ladakh and Arunachal Pradesh separates territory controlled by India and China. People argue on the actual location of the LAC because it spans approximately 3,488 kilometers and has not been publicly named. Zhou Enlai first used it in a 1959 letter to Jawaharlal Nehru. In 1914, India and Tibet agreed on the McMahon Line as their boundary, although the LAC lacks legal standing and a clear basis in international law. Various interpretations of the LAC result in violations and standoffs, such as the war in 1962, the clashes in 2013 and 2017, and the fight in the Galwan Valley 2020. The Special Representative's discourse and other approaches allow the two countries to discuss issues while maintaining peace.

More About Indian Army Armoured Vehicle Maintenance

  • The Indian Army maintains a diverse fleet of armored vehicles, including tanks such as the Arjun Main Battle Tank (MBT) and Soviet-built T-90s.

  • These vehicles are repaired on a regular basis at base workshops around India.

  • The Electronic Maintenance Management System (EMMMS) is critical for maintenance tasks as it improves uptime and operational efficiency.

  • The Army regularly improves and adds new equipment developed in the United States to the trucks to make them survive longer and perform better.

  • The Army's Central Vehicle Depot ensures that spare parts are readily available, which is critical for maintenance operations.

  • Complex repairs are performed by personnel trained at the Army Service Corps and other technical institutes.

  • Maintenance jobs involve the use of modern technology such as laser welding and 3D printing.
