Professor Devendra Jalihal began his tenure as Director of the Indian Institute of Technology Guwahati on May 16. He succeeds Professor Rajeev Ahuja, who has held the extra responsibility of IIT Guwahati since November 2023. Professor Jalihal previously worked as a Professor in IIT Madras' Department of Electrical Engineering.
Professor Devendra Jalihal received his BTech (Hons) from IIT Kharagpur in 1983 and his PhD in Electrical Engineering from Duke University, Durham, USA, in 1992. He joined IIT Madras' Department of Electrical Engineering in 1994 and served as Head of Department (HoD) from 2016 to 2019. Prior to joining IIT Guwahati, Professor Jalihal chaired IIT Madras' Centre for Outreach and Digital Education, which oversaw all of the institute's educational outreach initiatives.
Professor Jalihal's research interests include digital signal processing, wireless communication, real-time voice and video communication, and societal applications of wireless technologies. He has contributed to a variety of projects, including low bit-rate video conferencing, tactical communication systems, disaster management communication systems, and satellite communication networks. He also works with the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) on strategic communication issues.
Ranoj Pegu, Cabinet Minister for Higher Education, School Education, and Tribal Affairs in the Government of Assam, also congratulated the new IIT Guwahati Director on X (formerly Twitter).
