About Silk Cotton Tree
It is locally known as the semal tree. When mature, it is a tall deciduous tree with a buttressed base and a trunk covered in huge conical prickles.
It is most commonly found in moist deciduous and semi-evergreen forests, as well as on the plains. Occasionally found in plains from the shore and on the deciduous belt of hills up to 1400 meters.
Members of the Garasia tribe in Rajasthan believe they descended from semal trees.
In India, it is found in the Andaman and Nicobar Islands, Assam, Bihar, Kerala, Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra, Odisha, Punjab, Rajasthan, and Uttar Pradesh.
Significance Of The Tree
It's a fire-resistant tree. It is also recognized for its cooling abilities.
It is regarded as a pioneer tree that produces a high biomass each season and has been used to recover wastelands.
It fixes carbon and aids in carbon sequestration by dropping all leaves before flowering.
Many scholars believe the semal is a bio indicator, with late flowering indicating a scorching summer or a delayed monsoon.
The rock bees nest on its branches because the tree's spikes deter its predator, sloth bears.
During the monsoon season, tribal people feed on the tree's scarlet root.
It offers prospects for agroforestry and resources such as food, fodder, and fuel wood.
The Kathodi tribe uses the wood to build musical instruments, while the Bhil utilize it to make utensils.
