Description
Tata Cummins Private Limited (TCPL), a joint venture of Tata Motors Limited and Cummins Inc. USA, has opened a new factory in Jamshedpur, Jharkhand, to manufacture hydrogen-powered internal combustion engines (ICEs) for medium and large commercial vehicles.
Facility Details
The facility covers around seven acres and was opened within a year of signing a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Jharkhand government.
In addition to hydrogen-powered internal combustion engines (ICEs), the factory will produce low- to zero-emission technology items.
The plant was built by TCPL Green Energy Solutions (TCPL GES), a TCPL subsidiary formed in March 2023 to design and develop low- and zero-emission propulsion technology solutions.
Objectives & Goals
The key objectives of TCPL GES and the new manufacturing site are-
Reducing greenhouse gas emissions will help to combat climate change and improve air quality.
Making India's mobility more smart and environmentally friendly.
Allowing clients to gradually embrace emission-free and commercially viable solutions for cargo and passenger mobility.
Tata Cummins Joint Venture
Tata Motors and Cummins work together since 1993 through the 50:50 Tata Cummins joint venture. The joint venture intends to design and develop low- and zero-emission propulsion systems for the Indian commercial vehicle industry.
Trivia
Cummins announced a 15-litre hydrogen ICE in May 2022, followed by a medium-duty ICE-powered truck design at the IAA Transportation exposition in Hanover, Germany, some months later.
Tata Motors will also construct a new R&D facility in Pune, India, in 2023 to develop hydrogen ICEs as well as hydrogen storage and dispensing technology.
